These jointly-administered state parks are perched on the edge of the dammed
Mountain Fork River. The dam submerged the town of Hochatown. Hochatown State
Park is on the lake above the dam, Beavers Bend Resort is below. Together, they
have 3,482 mountainous acres of land and 14,240 lake acres. There is a Nature
Center, amphitheater, restaurant, a wealth of watersports and guided
horseback riding available. The fishing is good above and below the dam, with
trout streams in Beavers Bend, which are stocked every other week. The longest
hiking trail is 26 miles and there are backcountry camps that give hikers a
chance to get away from it all. There also are biking trails.
Numerous
park areas located around the lakes give the visitor an unmatched opportunity
for outdoor family fun and relaxation. Recreational facilities include boat
launching ramps, camping, picnic sites, beaches, water and sanitary facilities.
Nature
Center and Forest Heritage Museum: A menagerie of creatures from snakes
to owls with piercing yellow eyes can be found at the Nature
Center, which provides animal rehabilitation. The center offers interpretive
programs and activities daily.
The Forest Heritage Center and Museum is a
tribute to the area's forestry industry. About 60 million cubic feet of lumber
is harvested in McCurtain County each year. The center features 14 dioramas with
taped narration that cover the wood industry from prehistoric forests to
21st-century lumbering. The center also has a wood art gallery, a chainsaw
carving collection, tree-identification trail, antique forestry tools and
research library.
Broken Bow lake stretches 22 miles back into the Ouachita mountain country where its unusual beauty and scenic appeal beckons all nature enthusiasts. The mountain terrain is densely forested and there are many species of birds native to the area (including Bald Eagles) for birdwatchers to enjoy. Bird watchers frequently report sighting of the endangered pleated woodpecker, the great blue heron, and bald eagles.

year)Contact park naturalist at (580)494-6556. Email naturecenter@beaversbend.com. Meet at the Nature Center at 9 a.m., next to restaurant. Rain will not cancel Eagle viewing along the Mountain Fork River and on Broken Bow Lake.
For hikers there are several options available, one is a 26-mile trail named the David Boren Trail. Hikers encounter white-tailed deer, beaver, mink, eastern wild turkey, fox, raccoon, and, of course, squirrels. Three other trails, one being the Big Oak Nature Trail, offers significantly shorter distances and may prove suitable for use by senior citizens and small children. Trails wind along the River Bend Area, among the pines, and into the mountainous terrain.
The 14,240-acre lake is all that a lake should be: deep, clear blue water. It's so pure that it meets the standards for Oklahoma drinking water without treatment. The lake is a favorite for scuba divers, with an average depth of 62 feet, although there are places as deep as 185 feet. And there are no trees in it, unlike at many Texas lakes. Instead, 100-foot pines and hardwoods, with an undercover of maple, dogwood and maple, thrive on the 180 miles of shoreline.

It is the kind of golf course one would imagine finding in a pristine, pine-laden wilderness. And, in fact, the 18 holes that constitute Cedar Creek Golf Course were literally carved out of the wilds (the golf course abuts the McCurtain County Wilderness Area). Fairways cascade through stands of pine, oak, and hickory and past deer, fox, and wild turkey. More than one hole offers a fine view of Broken Bow Lake and the occasional glimpse of Bald Eagles. Cedar Creek is known for its narrow fairways and wooden roughs.
Beavers Bend State Park offers the best rainbow and brown trout fishing in Oklahoma. Besides the bimonthly stocking of 3000 or more rainbow trout by the ODWC, several thousand small brown trout are released annually, some of which reach trophy size. Twenty-inch browns and rainbows are not uncommon. The park contains three miles of the ten-mile trout stream and is not affected by power generating flows, providing fishing at all times. Many areas in the park are suited for children or beginner fishermen, while other areas will challenge even the most avid fisherman. Fly fishing is very popular throughout the fishery. The stream is divided into three sections with different regulations to enhance fishing opportunities. Trout stamps, fishing licenses and regulations are easily obtained in or near the park. Three Rivers Fly Shop, which is located at Three Rivers Fly Shop offers a full line of fly fishing gear, bait, instruction and guide service, as well as advice on stream conditions. Three Rivers Fly Shop also helps sponsor the very successful Kids Fishing Days through the month of March when most kids are having their Spring Break. With breathtaking scenery, cool clear water, and abundant wildlife, this simply is one of the best family vacation areas in the state.

Beavers Bend's Annual Easter Egg Hide-n-Hunt
The East Egg
Hunt is on Easter weekend (Saturday, 2 pm) . Age categories are 3 & under, 4
& 5, 6 to 9, and 10 to 12. If you have kids too old to hunt eggs, they might
have an even better time HIDING the eggs for the younger crowd! Visitors who
watch this year after year say it is hard to tell who has more fun, the hunters
or the hiders! So come on out to Beavers Bend on Saturday - there are things
goining on all day, but the highlight of the day is the Hide-n-Hunt and it
starts at 2! Friends of Beavers Bend Resort is working with Beavers Bend and the
Oklahoma Department of Tourism & Recreation in sponsoring this event. There
will be a stuffed Easter Bunny given away and the end of the Hunt. For more

Visitors to the
Center's museum will find historical documents, antique forestry tools, wood
art, homestead memorabilia, and a research library filled with books,
periodicals, and other materials pertaining to forestry. The Center is also home
to 14 dioramas (painted by Harry Rossoll of Atlanta, Georgia, the artist who
created Smokey Bear) that cover Prehistoric Forests, Caddo Indians, Papermaking
in the South, 1940's Lumbering, and Forest Appreciation. Each diorama is
accompanied by a taped narration.
Golfing, miniature golf, archery, tennis, jet skiing (rentals available), bumper boat rides, boating (party barge rentals available), and canoeing (rentals available).
Our local Resort, Beavers Bend Creative Escapes, offers a convenient self check-in and check-out process. Also, Beavers Bend Creative Escapes has an office which is located inside the Girls Gone Wine Winery, located on US259 North, just north of Stephens Gap Road.
