Norman Kittson's million-dollar stud farm, named Kittsondale, was located at what is now the intersection of Snelling and University in St. Paul. The mirror-image Kittsondale tunnels, which drain this area from opposite directions, took their name from his farm or the real estate addition to which it gave rise. The two tunnels are best known for their spiral stairways. East Kittsondale, seen in the photo above, carries a former surface stream, Cascade Creek, to the Mississippi River. The stairs are coated with orange flowstone. West Kittsondale is more commonly known as the Triple Helix Tunnel because it has three spiral stairways instead of just one. |
