Looking out from the entrance of Fountain Cave, engraving from an 1879 tourist brochure.  This cave was not, strictly speaking, the origin of the City of St. Paul, as often claimed, because St. Paul Proper was platted in the present downtown area, two miles away.  In the 1850s, Fountain Cave became the first show cave in the Upper Midwest.  The guides carried birch-bark torches.  The cave still exists but was sealed during the construction of Shepard Road in 1960.
