Elements of GOJU Karate | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Earth - CHI | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
Characteristics of Earth: Balanced, Powerful, Stable Fighter: Typically will be very good at blocking and countering. Lets the attacker come to them and will block attacks and counter very efficiently. Earthy fighters usually possess one punch knockout power. Wants to focus on blocking, parrying, counter techniques, and power techniques. Mass is the other element of power and will make up for a possible lack in speed. Is probably the most opposite style of fighter from the windy fighter. |
Fire - FAIA | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
Characteristics of Fire: Explosive, Opportunistic Fighter: This type of fighter will be able to identify and exploit their attackers mistakes. They must be able to close the gap efficiently and take advantage of an opportunity. Once this type of fighter has their opponent in trouble they will not stop until they have achieved control. Someone possessing the fire element is patient, waiting for the right opportunity to attack and then doing so unrelentingly. This type of fighter will possess some quickness, power, and the ability to block and counter but is willing to possibly take a little shot to give many back. Must work on reading an attacker, closing the gap, power, and blocking. |
Water - MIZU | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
Characteristics of Water: Flexible, Flowing, Adaptive Fighter: Typically will be able to go with the flow of the attacker. Can efficiently flow from one range to the next and can adapt to the situation. Fighters possessing the water element will want to work on flowing from range to range and technique to technique. Will rely more on parrying than a hard block. These fighters will absorb their attackers energy and use it against them. Water type fighters may not possess the one punch knockout power of the earthy fighter or the quickness of the windy fighter but will have enough of each to be very effective. Watery fighters look effortless in their approach to self-defense. May be the closest element to void but through lack of experience have not become proficient enough in the other elements. |
Wind - UINDO | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
Characteristics of Wind: Quick, Evasive, Hard to "get your hands around" Fighter: Typically uses a lot of footwork in both offense and defense. Gets in and strikes quickly and then back out again. Is willing to play the cat and mouse game to achieve the results they want. May lack power but makes up for it in speed and quickness. Wants to focus on perfecting their footwork, zoning, bob and weave, slipping and being able to close the gap quickly and efficiently. Work on speed drills to increase power. Speed is one of the factors of power so if they increase their speed they will become more powerful. Is probably the most opposite style of fighter from the earthy fighter. |
Void - MANASHII | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
Characteristics of Void: Encompasses all of the characteristics of the other elements. Fighter: This is the element we all want to possess as a martial artist. It takes years to achieve and may not be attainable to many. This type of fighter has enough experience and knowledge to be able to handle any situation or attacker with the greatest of efficiency making most any self-defense situation look effortless. I personally know of no one that possesses this element. Maybe someday, after years of hard work in the martial arts you may possess the void element. |
