After making an announcment regarding Ron Renfro's photos of tank farm operation
in NKP,
and "The Road" photos in the Gallery, LT Stockman's remarks in an email to us all
gave me (yet) another idea on capturing some history .. publish them.
Especially coming from one of the company officers and well respected (and very quiet)
ones amongst us with sentiments that (I'm sure) we all share.
And, it gives me an extra opportunity to call upon all of you that have not yet
provided me with material to publish on each of you, as individuals! No
more "Thanksgiving turkey" excuses! No "Holiday Season" excuses!
Put your "thinking caps" on and let the memories flow ... Don't worry
about my mailbox, it can hold a lot of mail (and pictures) -- just ask Ron!

I have fond memories of this young lady;
the closest I ever got to her was giving
her a ride home on the back of my 90 cc Yamaha ...
She made my job so much easier in the company orderly room - like the G.I.'s
having hootch girls to make their beds and shine their boots ...
I introduced her to G.I. humor and she taught me the Thai language
- never a "bad" word too! But, once in a while, I would get
on her "nerves," and she would say: "Ee-pee-ta-lei"
and I would wonder what it meant - she would never tell me ...
Later, after marrying a Thai woman, myself, I found out and <smiled>
as it was not so bad an expression, but then - I would say you didn't know
this young lady and how nothing foul would ever come out of her mouth,
if you (even) ever thought otherwise ...

Camp #44 (A.M.) Motor Pool Routine
"By the numbers..."
Korat, Thailand (1967)
Narrative:
Did you ever have to pull "motor stables by the numbers"? This
usually happens when the motorpool sergeant is pissed because we weren't
doing the checks that we were required to do. This
picture is Sgt. Voight about March
or April 1967 on the loud speaker telling us to "#1
open hood of vehicle, #2 check oil, #3 check water level" etc. etc. The
jeep in the back ground says"Chaplin 44th NCR" across the hood just
below the windows.
The picture is Martinez doing
his paper work in the cab and Faulk and someone else doing it by the numbers.
Voight would say "#so and so - Do this" Faulk would do it and
yell briskly to Martinez who would mark it down on the check list.
PL4 is next to them. Martinez is in either PL1 or PL2.
The next picture is the 2 1/2 tons
with their hoods up getting checked.
There was only two maybe three guys to do the whole line. Left to right
truck #'s PL17 -PL18- PL19 -PL29 -last can't read because a guy is in the way.

Camp #44 - 697th Motor Pool
"Life at Camp #44 and beyond..."
Korat, Thailand (1967)
Narrative:
Guys this is the famous PL2.
It went with the 2nd platoon to darn near every place we went. It even beat
me to Samae San. I was the assigned driver for a long time. One time,
I filled out the log book in red ink (at Udorn). It was the only pen we had.
When I got back to the motor pool and turned it in, the motorpool sgt. made
me redo the whole thing because red ink was for air craft!
I always had enough pens or pencils after that.
PL 1 is off to the left.
Sgt Marsh and someone else behind him.
Words can not express the feelings this vehicle brings to mind. All the places,
experiences, things done with friends, the work done -
with PL2.
I remember when I first went to Samae San.
Loria, Koelecke, and I were walking
to the motorpool and I saw PL2. WOW!
..was I thrilled and started telling Pete and Koelecke, excitedly, about the
truck. Koelecke said "ahh f#%&* a bunch of PL2's.." To this day over,
thirty years later, I still have not forgotten him saying that, or
Loria laughing
because I got so upset...
The next picture is the 2 1/2 ton PL47
mobil machine shop, one of very few such units.
It had lathes and anything you needed to work metal. The only other one I saw
was at 538th motorpool in Samae San and it could have very well been this one.
It was a unique vehicle. The sides would fold out and up and
then the floor would slide out to make room inside. Many stories to tell
about this guy also.
The girls in the EM club, which was right next to the motorpool,
would clean the table clothes and
hang them on the barbed wire around
the motorpool to dry and air out. It worked really well until (I would
suspect) it came time to try and get them off! <rofl>

Sgt. Lowe, Platoon Sergeant
Camp Vayama Spring, 1968
After I got to Thailand, I went up to Korat and stayed there for about a
week. Then, I was sent to Sattahip with the 2nd Platoon to replace and give a
break to the 3rd Platoon. That was about middle to late March 1968. There we
were attached to the 538th.
For a very brief spell (and I don't remember why), we were taken out of Samae
San and hootched in Vayama. I remember being there for just a few weeks
before we returned to Samae San.

> The picture of Sgt. Lowe was taken at Vayama. It has an interesting story.
As I got shorter and shorter, I became more and more unmanageable.(?)
I missed formation one morning and slept in. As I was later heading toward
the mess hall for a late btreakfast, Sgt. Lowe appeared asking me why I was
not at work. It was at that very moment when I snapped this picture.
Hi Pete,
May be that picture of Sgt Lowe saved your butt from some "extra duty."

Subject: Re: bombs away
To be totally honest with you guys, I do not remember exactly where the ammo dump was. All I remember is that this off limits road wound its way in and around this mountain down in the Sami San (or maybe the Vayama) area. There were roughly 30 to 40 places where the area had been leveled out and an ammo dump was located there. I think the reason for this dump winding around the mountain is that in case of an attack (or an accident), if some bombs went off, they would not take out all the ammo, just those stored in that specific area. My last official duty in the Sami San area was to do a complete As Built survey of the entire ammo dump. Several of the locals would not work on this project as they said they were too scared to be around the bombs. I recall that the day I took the photo I made a comment something to the extent of "I wonder what would happen if I tapped this bomb with a hammer?" My recollection is that one of the GIs refused to work with me the next day, something about me being insane, I think was his excuse.
