About one and eight-tenths of a mile from the parking lot on the Alum Cave Bluffs trail, we encountered the first major landmark, Arch Rock. Essentially a large rock formation, it stood beside the creek that paralleled the trail up to this point. Erosion and other forms of weathering had created its trademark central hole, of which a set of stairs had been carved into for passage of the trail.
