Adele's father, Pierre Blanchard, was born in LaBarre, France, the son of a maker of wine barrels. During his childhood, he and his best friend Jean-Luc Picard dreamed of joining Starfleet and adventuring among the stars. The two young men entered the Academy together, but Pierre was dismissed during his first year when a practical joke back-fired. After leaving Starfleet, Pierre attended Harvard University and eventually earned a doctorate in seismology. He and Picard remained friends, and he named his only daughter after Picard's aunt.
Adele was an only child, and was doted upon by her father. She demonstrated her athletic prowess at an early age and when she was twelve broke her arm playing Parisses Squares, much to the horror of her mother. While she was at home recuperating, the family was paid a visit by Captain Picard, who brought the girl a miniature model of his ship, the Stargazer. It was Adele's first meeting with her father's old friend, and she was totally enchanted with his stories. It was at that time that she determined to enter Starfleet herself.
At the age of 17, Adele applied to and was denied entrance in Starfleet Academy. As a consolation gift, she was allowed to spend a week on the Stargazer while she was on a diplomatic mission. She was allowed to sit at the CONN for a short time, and from that point on decided that she wanted to become the best pilot in Starfleet.
Adele excelled at the Academy, her intelligence and personality making her a favorite of instructors and fellow cadets. She soon made a name for herself as a natural leader. During her second year, she made two friends whom she would remain close to throughout her career. One was her roommate, Athena Sirtis, with whom she shared a love for athletic pursuits, while fondly ridiculing her taste in pets. The two young women spent many an evening sharing confidences and dreaming of the future.
B'Elin James was targeted as the cadet least likely to succeed, due to her rebellious and abrasive nature. Adele was paired with her for a class project, and she was determined to make friends with the self-made outcast, pursuing her with a diligence that finally paid off. It did cause her some irritation however, when B'Elin nick-named her the Practically Perfect Princess.
While Athena and B'Elin intially did not get along well, their friendship was also solidified after the trio was involved in a terrorist attack on the Academy. Two disgruntled former instructors removed the safeties on the holodeck and then set off an explosion that trapped B'Elin under a pile of rubble. Adele and Athena worked together to save their friend and capture the terrorists, and Adele was decorated for her efforts.
Adele quickly made a name for herself as a crack pilot, and after graduation was assigned to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards as a test pilot for the Galaxy-class project. She was one of the pilots who flew the Enterprise-D during preliminary tests. Then, in 2361, she was devastated by the death of her father during a sceintific mission. It was only then that she found out about his dismissal from the Academy, and his childhood dreams of commanding a starship. Determined to fulfill her father's dream, Adele applied for transfer to deep space duty, and was posted as part of the CONN department on the Exeter.
Pegged by many to be on the fast track for command, Adele surprised many--including herself--by falling deeply in love with the executive officer of the Exeter, Commander Troy Gillman. For a time, she even considered giving up her career to become his wife, but after some serious soul-searching she chose Starfleet instead. However, she still remains good friends with Gillman, now an Admiral.
2362 saw her transfer to the Missouri as Chief of Operations, where she was re-united with her old friend B'Elin James, who was part of the ship's security contingent. The two of them quickly proved their ability to work well together, taking advantage of B'Elin's latent telepathic and empathic abilities to form a solid team. They proved to be nearly inseparable off duty, spending a good part of their leisure hours together in the gymnasium or taking shore leave together.
In 2369, she proved her mettle once again at Antharaxis III. She was part of an away mission sent to conduct delicate negotiations with the planetary government, when the team was ambushed by rebels and the XO was killed. Adele quickly took charge of the away team and salvaged the mission, cementing the relationship between the planetary council and the Federation. As a reward for her actions, she was promoted to Commander and named XO in place of her successor.
Adele is fiercely loyal to her ship and her friends. In 2372 she was instrumental in having Athena Sirtis named Chief of Sciences on the Missouri, hoping to pull her out of the depression she had fallen into after the Wolf 359 tragedy. This marked the reunion of the Three Musketeers for the first time since their Academy days, and they quickly re-established their former closeness.
B'Elin transferred off the Missouri in 2374 and shortly afterwards the CO of the Missouri, Capt. John Alexander, retired. Adele was a natural to step into the center seat. There were many in the fleet who targeted her as a shoe-in for rapid promotion to the Admiralty. However, Adele has no desire to leave the position she has worked towards her entire life.
Adele is cool and confident, radiating a strong command presence even when off duty. She tends to remain aloof, rarely socializing with her crew and preferring the company of a very few close friends. While her startling good looks attract more than her share of masculine attention, she dates very seldom. When not on duty she can often be found in the privacy of her quarters or utilizing the holodeck to pursue one of her favorite pastimes, fox-hunting in the New England countryside.
Staunchly loyal to friends, Adele can yet be very demanding when the need arises. However, she has often said that she will not ask of others what she is not willing to do herself. She is rarely content to remain behind on her ship during a mission, hiding behind her rank, as she puts it.
