Niall was born on the private merchant vessel SS Tonn Cliona. His parents, Michael and Brianna, originally came from the town of Drogheda, in Ireland on Terra, and the young Niall grew up listening to them speak of the lore of that country. The Corey family was large, consisting of 5 boys and 3 girls, of which Niall was the youngest. As such, he was spoiled terribly by the rest of his family.
The Corey family was a merry and rambunctious crew, and their eight children grew up chasing each other around the ship and playing pranks on each other. However, as soon as they were old enough, each was given his/her own particular job to perform on the ship. In this way, the Coreys avoided the need to hire help. The young Niall showed an affinity for flying at a very early age.
A shrewd businessman, Michael Corey liked to play fast and loose with the shipping regulations of the various worlds that the family did business with. He liked to say that he could out-Ferengi the Ferengi. More than once his business dealings attracted the attention of various law enforcement entities, but due to Niall’s piloting skills the Tonn Criona was usually able to elude capture. On the rare instances on which the ship was boarded and/or detained, there was always a total absence of contraband or any questionable merchandise, thanks to several secret hiding places around the ship.
One of Michael Corey’s dreams was to have one of his children attend Starfleet Academy, and Niall soon felt pressured to be the realization of this dream. Being a dutiful son, he applied to the Academy at the appropriate age and was readily accepted. His piloting skills once again attracted attention, this time from Niall’s instructors and fellow students. The young man boasted that he could fly anything, and he indeed proved that he could quickly learn his way around the conn in a wide variety of vessels.
However, in spite of his superb flying abilities, Niall received only average grades. Having always been schooled informally, on his family’s ship, he had a difficult time adjusting to a structured course of study. He also enjoyed playing pranks on his fellow students and, at times, his instructors. Not all of these pranks were well-received, or even tolerated. Finally he was called before one of the Lead Instructors, Cdr. Gwendolyn Sparks, who placed an official reprimand in his file. Along with the reprimand, Sparks gave Niall some encouraging advice, and an offer of help with his studies.
When Niall graduated from the Academy, he did so in the lower half of his class, but with a recommendation in his file from Commander Sparks. Niall was posted to the USS Grissom, as a CONN Officer. While there, he worked diligently to prove himself worthy of his position, and soon earned the respect of many on board. However, there were some on the Grissom’s crew who did not appreciate Niall’s jocular nature, and were annoyed by his pranks. One of these was Lt. (j.g.) Boyd Madison, in the ship’s Operations department.
In 2355, Niall got some tragic news. The Tonn Criona had apparently ventured far into the Romulan Neutral Zone, on an unknown mission. She was destroyed, presumably by the Romulans, with all hands. The only other member of the Corey family who escaped death was Niall’s sister Maire, who had married and left the family’s ship to be with her merchant husband, Jacob Anderson.
Niall was devastated by this news, and tried desperately to find out what had happened to cause the destruction of his family’s ship. Investigation of the incident was difficult, because it had happened deep within the Neutral Zone. The Romulans were not eager to give out information, and the Federation was reluctant to create a diplomatic crisis. So, when the matter was officially dropped, Niall was beside himself. He came to detest Starfleet for not caring about his parents, and resigned his commission to go off in search of his own answers.
Nothing is known of Niall’s personal history for some time after he left Starfleet. He is currently the owner of the SS Queen Maeve. Of Alpha Centauran registry, the Queen started out life in 2374 as a Federation Scout ship, but has since been modified so intensively that it looks dramatically different than others of that class. When asked, Niall will tell a story about winning the Queen from a Ferengi trader, in a dabo match. Whether this is actually the truth or not is uncertain.
Presently, Niall works hard at maintaining an air of mystery around himself. Stories exist of his having spent some time with the Maquis, and with the Romulan Unificationists. He is rumored to be involved In any number of questionable activities, including smuggling and the buying and selling of quality merchandise and information. He has yet to be convicted of any crimes, however, by the Federation or by any other world powers.
Niall delights in stirring up trouble, either between individuals or between the various powers that be in the galaxy. He is always sure to be long gone from the area by the time the trouble breaks out. He still has a rabid hatred of the Romulans, and his discovery of a dissident faction within that race has only goaded him into making even more mischief, in the hopes that he may one day bring the Star Empire to its ruin. He would say that it is not necessary to fire weapons to bring down a government, with a smile on his face.
Niall can be extremely charming and persuasive, to both men and women. He enjoys romancing beautiful women, but has yet to allow himself to be tied down to one woman for any length of time. He is wary of giving his heart, and there are rumors that it was once broken – quite badly. He gives the impression of not taking anything seriously, but inside he is very serious and purposeful. He is devoted to his sister. Niall often affects a pronounced Irish brogue, however in truth he has at most a very slight accent.
Tall and good-looking, Niall is well aware of the effect that he has on women. He usually wears clothing that is loose-fitting and yet shows off his trim physique. He often wears a couple days’ growth of beard, which he will scratch absent-mindedly while deep in thought. His eyes are a piercing grey-blue, and he has a way of appearing to look straight into the soul.
