Delta Grey

This is a shadowy authorization for investigations of conspiracy that originated in 2160, at the beginning of the United Federation of Planets. Howell Bridger was the focus of the first of several Delta Grey operations that have occurred on the USS Knight. Of course, Bridger has a history with Delta Grey. In 2161, he was the center of an investigation into his own political affiliations with the Separatist Party. As a war hero of the First Romulan War, Bridger's affiliation with this group was considered highly suspicious. However, it did not prevent his later enlistment into the famous "Class of the Colonels" at what was later call Starfleet Academy.

Delta Grey is the code for investigations of conspiracy at the command levels of Starfleet and the UFP political structure. DG investigators are given broad powers of action, and are overseen by Intelligence and JAG management teams. In 2374, Bridger was DG investigator of First Officer Kel Temmin, while Derby Coolidge, an Intelligence officer, was investigating Bridger himself. Of course, it was later discovered that Coolidge himself was co-opted by enemies, including the infamous Black Knight.

After being cleared of conspiracy, Bridger went to Starfleet with the basic plans for Operation: Knight Night, a further large scale investigation of conspiracy and corruption under the guise of being lead patrol ship of the Venn Sector. In order to make this work, Admiral M'Benga joined the Knight, ostensibly as a teacher of the many psi-gifted staff on that ship, and to investigate the medical and psychological effects of kironide on several members of her crew.

As part of the main Operation, the Knight has conducted Operation: Freewheel, a massive interdiction mission, aimed at locating and inspecting probable illegal merchant activity in two sectors at the core of the UFP. Freewheel was massively successful, and revealed more intensive enemy activity that was suspected earlier. It also involved diplomatic and joint military actions by the Klingon and Romulan Empires. And nearly brought the UFP into warfare with the ancient First Federation, over the illegal 'piracy' of FF merchantmen by the USS Knight and other UFP ships.
