During Allen's second year in the academy he got involved in an elaborate cheating ring, that promised to ensure that he graduated at the top of his class. Allen had never been a poor student, in fact he had graduated valedictorian from his high school. But when he got into the Academy he was suddenly inundated with so many experiences and pleasures that he had never been allowed to participate when he was at home. He loved his parents, but they sheltered all their children from the real world.
He hadn't done as well in his first year as his mum and dad had hoped he would, and Allen didn't see it getting any better. So during his first week of second year, he and a few friends met with some other school mates and they arranged this ring. They thought it was going perfectly, Allen was happy with the scores that he was getting. But then out of the blue one of the ring members threatened to go tell administration officials what was going on. Allen knew that this wasn't going to work out and that he needed to get out on his own. He didn't want to disappoint his parents that way, he'd rather they think he was dead. He arranged a way for him to get out of the Academy and fled Earth.
He got onboard a freighter as a general maintenance worker, using Fischer as his new last name. He work his way across the galaxy, moving from ship to ship and doing any job that was required. He eventually learned the ins and outs of many jobs on a freighter, though he excelled at piloting and command. He earned the trust of one Captain, Michael Watson, who took him under his wing, taught him everything he knew and then left him his ship when he retired.
Allen was surprised and very honoured when Michael passed the ship onto him. He did his best to run the ship the way Watson wanted him too, but unfortunately Allen had also developed a love of gambling on his tour of the galaxy.
For awhile he managed to keep his gambling habit tame and not too costly. But it finally caught up with him. He was in a private card game, and he was doing quite well. He had the hand of a life time but was running out of things to bet... He knew he should walk away but he couldn't. In the end the guy opposite had a better hand of a lifetime and walked out of that game with Allen's ship.
