Donald grew up in rural northern California, to an upper middle class home. His father worked in construction, and the boy helped his father out after school and summers. He was also active in sports while in school, and grew up to be very fast and strong. Donald's uncle was a police officer, and the boy was instilled from a very early age with a strong sense of right and wrong.
In school, Donald found a strong affinity for science. He dreamed of going to space one day, and being an engineer on a starship. One day, while at his uncle's house, he met a man who served as a security guard on a Starfleet ship. The young man was fascinated by the guard's stories, and decided then and there that this was what he wanted to do. He changed his course of study accordingly, and entered the Starfleet Specialist School.
Upon completion of his training, Donald was posted aboard the Lexington, working in Internal Security. He took to his new position swimmingly, and was soon well-respected by his peers and his superiors. He was influential in capturing a renegade crewmember who attempted to attack a visiting Cardassian ambassador.
In 2365, Donald was transferred to the Farragut. Here, he met a young nurse named Lisa Haufler, and fell in love. The two were married and had a son, Beau. They were very happy until Donald was transferred to the Cochrane. The Oberth-class ship had no quarters for families, and so Lisa and little Beau were left behind on the Farragut. The couple drifted apart, and eventually divorced. Now that both of them are serving on the Knight, they have taken the first steps toward a reconciliation.
Donald is a very confident person, without being arrogant. He is very respectful of his superiors, and can be a good friend. He likes to have fun, but when he is on duty he is all business. He is a loving father.
