2353-2357 Starfleet Academy, majored in Security

Service Record

2357-2359 USS Farragut, Ensign, Security -- Dusty's tenure on the Farragut was marked by frequent altercations with fellow crewmembers, and in 2359 a reprimand was placed in her personnel file following a particularly nasty argument with a VIP whom she'd been assigned to guard.

2359-2362 USS Lexington, Lt(jg), Security -- Dusty worked conscientiously to improve her temper, and was able to progress as far as Assistant Chief of Executive Protection. She was decorated, and promoted, for assisting in the rescue of Ambassador Reynaldo Stephanopolis, who had been kidnapped by Milanii terrorists.

2362-2374 USS Missouri, Lt. (jg), Security -- While serving on the Missouri, Dusty formed a strong bond of friendship with the ship's XO, Commander Adele Blanchard, whom she had known at Starfleet Academy. She demonstrated a steadfast loyalty to Captain John Alexander and the rest of the command staff, once they had earned her trust, and showed a strong sense of duty toward those she was assigned to protect. She gained a reputation for being very demanding of those under her command, requiring that they give only their best at all times.

Commander Dusty James

2374-2375 USS Knight, Lt. (j.g.) Asst. Chief of Executive Protection -- Dusty and took her new duties seriously. She quickly became embroiled in a dispute with Romulan Ambassador Yanek and, with the help of Lt. (j.g.) David Poirot, eventually exposed him as the infamous spy Jerrakar.

2375-2375 USS Knight, Lt. (j.g.) Acting Chief of Security -- Dusty took over this position when then-CSO Lt. Seath Ttrail disappeared during the Battle of the Fisher King.

2375-2376 USS Knight, Lt., Chief of Security, Second Officer -- Dusty was promoted to this position when Lt. Cdr. Cyn Stirling was appointed XO.

2376-2376 USS Knight, Cdr., XO -- When Lt. Cdr. Stirling elected to remain on Aebrynnis as Federation Liaison, Dusty was elevated two steps in rank and named XO in her place.

2376-present USS Knight, Capt., CO -- Following the Terran Invasion, and the elevation of Capt. Bridger to Commodore and CO of Knight One Squadron, Dusty was named CO of the Knight. There were many in Starfleet who initially thought this promotion was a mistake, however she later proved herself very worthy of the position.

Captain Dusty James

Background

Dusty was born on Starbase 24, near the Klingon colony on Khitomer. She was devoted to her father, Carl, who was a merchant doing business closely with the colonists. Carl James and his daughter spent many hours on Khitomer, and the young girl learned much about Klingon culture and the language.

When Romulans massacred the colony in 2346, the elder James was devastated by the loss of his friends and colleagues. This was compounded by the death, soon after, of his wife Mary from an unidentified virus. A year later, he committed suicide. The starbase commander, Captain Brandon, wanted to send Dusty back to Earth to live with her paternal grandparents. However, the girl rebelled and ran away to live in the lower reaches of the base. She spent the next few years stealing food and whatever else she needed to survive, and sleeping in the cargo bays. When she was 15, Dusty was discovered and befriended by Stephen Armstrong, a security guard on the starbase. He adopted the girl and treated her like his own daughter, helping her to gain admission to Starfleet Academy.

While at the Academy, Dusty quickly earned a reputation for being difficult to get along with, and most of the other students chose to stay away from her when possible. In her second year, she was involved in an accident in which terrorists removed the safety protocols from the holodeck. She worked with another cadet, Adele Blanchard, to rout the terrorists, and the two later became close friends.

Dusty James

In 2360, when Ensign Dusty James was a member of the crew of the USS Lexington. she was assigned to provide security for a routine survey team. One of the other team members was an engineer, Ensign Dal Sherron, with whom Dusty was involved romantically. When the team beamed down to the planet's surface, they were immediately caught in the crossfire between two rival factions of the Draygoni, and Sherron was shot down as the team scrambled for shelter. The young ensign James tried to stay behind to protect him, but was pulled away by the rest of the team. For years afterward, Dusty blamed herself for Sherron's death, and vowed never to love another fellow crew-member.

Shortly after transferring to the Knight, Dusty did find herself romantically involved with another fellow crew-member. Lt. (j.g.) David Poirot, Chief CONN Officer, pursued Dusty until he finally won her over. When both of them were infused, against their wills, with the drug kironide, this enabled them to have an even deeper mental connection. David and Dusty were passionately linked until his death during the Terran Invasion, in 2376. Dusty took the news of David's death very hard, and although she eventually learned to put her grief behind her, she never fully got over it. Shortly after his funeral, when Dusty was cleaning out David's quarters on the Knight, she found the engagement and wedding rings that he had planned to give her, and wears them in his memory.

Shortly after David's death, Dusty discovered that she was pregnant with twins. This knowledge helped her immensely to get over his death, but she always had a lingering regret that David never knew he was going to be a father. On Dec. 24, 2376, Dusty gave birth to David James Poirot and Jeanne-Marie Poirot.

Dusty James

Personality Profile

Although at times difficult to get along with, Dusty demonstrates an unswerving loyalty to those who have earned her trust. She would readily place her own life in danger in order to protect her fellow officers and those persons she has been assigned to guard. She is very suspicious of newcomers, and can seem almost paranoid at times. Dusty has a rabid hatred of Romulans, due to her childhood experiences. She is, however, quite fond of the Klingon culture.

Dusty has strong psi powers, due to an involuntary infusion with the illicit drug kironide in 2375, which intensified pre-operant abilities which were present due to her genetic heritage. She has strong telepathic and telekinetic powers, which are only partially trained. She is also highly empathic. Another unique facet of her powers is the presence of very strong mental shields, making her almost psionically invisible. She has been known, while in mental communion with Lt. Poirot (who also had very strong psi powers) to be capable of limited astral projection as well.

After David's death and the birth of her children, Dusty has found a new sense of peace and serenity. She takes great comfort from being with her children, although does find it difficult to juggle command of a starship with being a single mother of twins. At times of stress, her old temper still rears its head, though.

Special Notes

Unknown to all but Captain Bridger, Admiral M'Benga, and perhaps one or two others, Dusty's genetic heritage is rather complex. She is descended from the group of genetic super-men led by Khan in the 1990's. Dusty herself was unaware of this tie until she transferred to the Knight. Because of this, Dusty is physically much stronger than she would appear to be. She is very sensitive about her ancestry, and is fearful of this information falling into the wrong hands.
