Historical Note: Cardassian Occupation - From 2328 to 2369 the Cardassian Empire occupied the planet Bajor and surrounding systems by force of arms. They were eventually forced to leave after decades of terrorist actions by a thriving Resistance movement and pressure from outside governments. During the Occupation the Cardassians persecuted the Bajoran people and tried to suppress their culture and religion, in fact anyone practicing the Bajoran faith was arrested and imprisoned. [Rapture]
Born in 2341, Korani Korisse grew up on Occupied Bajor, in the work camps of the Cardassian oppressors. At a very young age, her parents were killed by the Cardassians in a successful attempt to free a group of children from the Cardassian work camp at Elemspur, where they had been interred with their parents. The price of the children’s freedom was the lives of all the parents involved.
She joined the Resistance at the age of 14, as an herbalist's assistant, along with her younger sister Ri'a. They worked hard learning to heal the wounded freedom fighters of her cell. Time passed, her sister became a pilot. Korisse became quite skilled at herbal medicine. She was allowed to join her first foray as a medic at the age of 15. She caught the attention of T'Porani, an ancient Vulcan physician who had come to Bajor to offer humanitarian aid.
T'Porani was impressed by the older Korani sister’s determination and drive to learn. She arranged to take Korisse with her into the field, teaching her basic healing skills, trauma treatments and field surgery. By the age of 17, Korisse was a competent medic in her own right. At the end of the Cardassian Occupation, Korisse was 28 Terran Standard years old. She had grown fond of T'Porani, who she called "Foster-mother," and so since she chose to go offworld to pursue her interest in medicine and unique herbal remedies.
After a difficult parting with her sister Ri'a, she left Bajor with T'Porani, heading to Vulcan where she entered the Vulcan Science Academy on T'Porani's recommendation. The course was grueling, but Korisse thrived. Two years into her studies on Vulcan, T'Porani died in an accident. About the same time, Korisse received word that her sister had been accepted to Starfleet Academy.
Several years passed. Her studies were complete. Finally, Doctor Korani Korisse began to find the sedate life on Vulcan too slow for her, she wanted more challenge in her life, having no taste for the strict Vulcan discipline which would be required to continue her studies there. After debating with herself for several weeks, she applied to Starfleet Medical. Her education at the Medical division of the Vulcan Science Academy stood her in good stead. She was readily accepted into Starfleet Medical.
She spent some time on Terra at Starfleet Medical, her life experience and natural aptitude quickly advanced her to the rank of junior grade lieutenant and earning her placement as a medical officer aboard the USS Horatio. Dr. Korani Korisse served well aboard the Horatio, and so when the position of Assistant Chief Medical Officer opened on the Knight, Marcus Chira, CMO on the Horatio recommended her. Much to her surprise, she was transferred immediately.
Korisse served as ACMO on the Knight under Dr. Rejah Bherran, until his transfer to Starfleet Academy. She then assumed the mantle of Chief Medical Officer.
The Knight changed captains twice before Capt. Benjamin Braxton took command. Dr. Korani continued her research into herbal medicines and nanotechnology during the years of her service on the Knight.
In mid 2375 Dr. Korani followed her betrothed, LCdr Naral Darven to serve aboard the flagship of the 14th fleet, the USS Atlantis as Chief Medical Officer.
She was pronounced KIA aboard that ship when it was destroyed in combat. She was awarded the rank of Commander for her actions. She was returned to the USS Knight by Captain Howell Bridger, where she agreed to return to the crew.
Several months later, she miscarried a child, and nearly resigned once again. Her husband blamed her for the death of their child, and departed for Bajor. Starfleet intervened, at the request of Adm. M’Botha M’benga, and offered her a position in his newly forming task force.
Korani Korisse is a quiet, driven personality. She tends to feel great responsibility for caring for those around her. She can also be quite fiery, like most of her race. Her faith is quite strong, and she holds to the ceremonies and celebrations of her people.
Her Bajoran heritage is important to her, as is her study of medicine. She has devoted quite some time to developing a good "bedside manner" in order to alleviate some of the tension felt by other races when confronted by a Bajoran, a race still considered refugees by many cultures.
Korani Korisse considers herself an open minded, caring individual. She knows the regulations of Starfleet Medical as well as she knows her types of bandages. And yet, above and beyond the regulations of Starfleet, Dr. Korani holds to the Hippocratic Oath. She is proud of her heritage, and proud to be a Starfleet Medical Officer, where she has the opportunity to experience new and challenging things on a regular basis.
Dr. Korani keeps a detailed log, feeling that her experiences may aid someone else in the future. She also attempts to keep in contact with her sister, Ri'a as often as their respective careers allow. She seldom speaks of her days on Bajor, during the Occupation. She tends to avoid conversations that may pertain to the topic.
Many find her professional reserve unnerving. She sometimes appears distant and cold.
There is a notation in her Starfleet Medical file which marks her for future considerations.
