Family Background

His family was almost entirely made up of pilots, some famous, some not, but most were quite skilled.

Background

He was born to a caring family, and would have lead a happy life till the Borg changed all that. Both his parents were pilots, so Grant followed in the Family trade, and was able to pilot most simpler crafts at a very young age. Grant was already becoming a great pilot, but his parents still had much to offer him. Then the tragedy struck. He and his family were travelling to a vacation home in a transport when an accidental course change brought them to a Borg Cube.

By the time a nearby ship responded to the distress calls, the entire ship, including several other families and the crew, was deserted except for Grant, the pilot, an the co-pilot. The Pilot was a family friend of the Lightoller's Taff Murdose. When they entered the vessel, they found Grant trying to correct the ships course, and the pilot and co-pilot were unconsious, having hit the bulkhead during the first volley. He never talked of that event, and the only information about the actual attack came from the flight recorder.

Grant found himself without anywhere to turn. He was given to the guardianship of a cruel Aunt, but he ran away. He was only in the middle of his teens, but he found himself on the street. He did whatever he could to survive, and began drifting to a life of crime.

Grant was barely saved from this life. He was motivated by his desire to avenge his parents, and his desire to be the best pilot possible. He sought Taff Murdose, who he knew would understand him because he too lost his family in the Borg attack. Grant's thoughts proved correct, as Murdose took him in. Grant became an honor student, and that coupled with his piloting skill got him into Starfleet Academy. His record as a pilot was nearly unmatched, but he managed to get on the bad side of many teachers due to his attitude and disregard for authority. He still managed to graduate almost exactly in the middle of his class.

His problem with authority managed to keep him down despite his skill during his career, however he still deeply wished to avenge his parents. He put in numerous requests to be assigned to a ship which would battle the Borg, and Starfleet finally granted his request when they let him join the crew of the USS Knight.

Unfortunately, due to a clerical error, Grant was not transferred to the Knight until after it had returned from the Borg-gate catastrophe. Therefore, he missed his one chance to go after the Borg. However, after the scandal, the Knight became a sort of misfit ship, which fit in with Grant's personality very well. Grant found that he could achieve on the Knight, and his desire to succeed at his new post began to replace his desire to avenge the death of his parents, a desire that had guided him throughout his life to that point. Finally, Grant's talents could be examined separate from the attitude that had held him back throughout his career, and attitude which had been caused by his desire for vengeance.

When the Knight suffered the loss of much of its engineering staff, the command staff decided that it was better to rebuild the ship's crew from the inside rather than attempt to attract other officers, who would be hard to find considering the Knight's reputation at that point. So Grant, who had minored in Engineering at the academy, having learned how to take care of a ship throughout his career as a pilot, and who had proven to be proficient in engineering on the Knight as a transporter officer, was offered the chance to switch to Engineering. The idea was that if he passed the proper Starfleet engineering proficiency tests, and spent a period of time as Assistant Chief of Engineering training under Bridger, he would eventually become the Chief Engineer. After a tenure under Bridger in which he worked hard and proved himself capable, Grant became the Chief Engineer.

Psychological Profile

Grant is a loner, and has been that way since the attack. He has very bad memories of the attack, and is constantly remembering that moment. He also never talks about it, so it is unknown how he survived. Grant has a hatred for authority, due to his days on the street. His piloting ability is very good, and he always tries to get better. His other main motivation is to seek vengence. He said during the profile, "The biggest mistake the Borg made was not finishing the job, and I intend to make them pay for it." This gives an excellent view into his psyche, for the job to which he refers is his death.

Following his assignment to the Knight, Grant's mental health has seemed to improve drastically. The ship seems to have had a positive affect on him, as the black marks that had chased him his entire career have yet to be found on his Knight record. He seems to have either gotten over the deaths of his parents, or pushed it down very far. Despite this change, however, we must keep watch over this case, as his mental health may be unstable. Further analysis is recommended.

Unique Characteristics

Very good memory. A scar near his right shoulder that has never been explained in medical records.
