Boyd was born the oldest of five children. His parents owned and operated a farm where they raised wheat and soybeans, along with a few cattle. From an early age, Boyd helped his father on the farm. However, he had always dreamed of going to space and his parents encouraged this interest.
The young man was readily accepted into the Academy, and excelled in his studies. During his second year, Boyd's father was killed in a farming accident and he nearly left the Academy to return home and run the family farm. However, his mother and brother Neil would not hear of this and insisted that he do his father's memory proud by becoming the best Starfleet officer he could.
Upon graduation, Boyd was posted to the USS Grissom as a sensor systems officer. He was proud to serve aboard a ship named after his countryman, and immediately set about to do the best job he could to serve his ship and the Fleet. His ready wit and eagerness to do his duty quickly won him many friends.
In 2350, Boyd met and married a fellow officer, Ensign Carol Burchett, a nurse on the Grissom. They moved into the married officers' quarters and were very happy. A year later their daughter Rachel was born, a beautiful little girl who was the apple of her father's eye. Boyd, Jr., was born in 2355, thus making the little family complete. After the birth of their son, Carol resigned her commission and devoted herself to the raising of the children.
Boyd moved slowly up through the ranks, proving himself an able officer who was well-liked and admired by both his superiors and fellow crewmembers. In 2362 the Ajax was called to the aid of a scientific research colony near the border of the Romulan Neutral Zone. Boyd was a member of the team that beamed down to the colony, only to discover that everyone had been killed. The man never forgot the experience.
In 2369 Boyd proudly walked Rachel down the aisle and gave her to a young security guard who served on the Ajax. A year later, Lt. Henry Porter was transferred to Starfleet Headquarters on Terra, and his young wife accompanied them. Boyd and Carol later celebrated the birth of two grand-daughters, in 2371 and '73. Boyd, Jr., returned to Terra himself in 2373 to attend Starfleet Academy.
May 6, 2370, marked the saddest day of Boyd's life when his beloved Carol succumbed to a rare illness. In his grief, he requested a transfer and was posted as commanding officer of Starbase 40, a seldom-visited way-station on the edge of Sector 001. Since that time, he has continued to serve Starfleet to the best of his ability, and is respected and liked by his entire crew.
In 2376 came the second worst experience of Boyd's life. That was when Starbase 40 was visited by what was later discovered to be a duplicate of the USS Knight, demanding access to the base's computer files. When Boyd refused the alternate Knight's captain, B'Elin James, ordered the base and everyone on it destroyed ruthlessly. Boyd, himself, was left for dead after being tortured, and survived only through the efforts of the base's chief engineer, who had managed to hide and avoid being killed himself.
After returning to Terra for a brief stint teaching at the Academy, Boyd was given command of the USS Jupiter, part of the Knight One Squadron. While Boyd has had some qualms about working so closely with Commodore Bridger, and with Captain James of the Knight, he has worked hard to put aside those feelings, and remind himself that this is not the same woman who tortured him and destroyed his previous command.
To first impression, Boyd is a very serious person and very intent on what he perceives to be his purpose in life. While this is true to a certain extent, he is also a kind man and a friend to many. He has seen much of life, and carries a kind of inner sadness as a result of that, but he tends to look on life as a philosopher.
