Interests: Marine life (has a collection of tropical fish), swimming and diving, and gardening. Uses her hobbies as 'quiet time' and a chance to be alone. A holo-program of her own creation is a tropical archipelago and coral reef.
Zaia chose her career at a very early age. Her father was a diplomat, which meant she spent a lot of time travelling. On one stayover at a starbase, she made friends with a human child named Mary. The two of them became good friends, but the friendship came to a tragic end when Mary died using a holo-program with Zaia when the holodeck malfunctioned and electrocuted her. By the time Zaia had managed to deactivate the holodeck and get help, it was too late. Zaia blamed herself for the accident and it was this incident that eventually led to her studying medicine. She went through Starfleet Medical Academy and graduated aged 28.
Zaia's first ship was the Intrepid-class USS Halifax. She served aboard the ship for five years. In one mission in 2273, her parents came aboard, to be taken to Vulcan and they were believed to have had a disagreement of some kind. It isn't known what happened there between them, but they haven't been in contact since.
The Halifax took part in the final battle of the Dominion War, and was wrecked early on when a Jem'Hadar kamikaze attack struck it, destroying the rear section of the ship and leaving the front a wreck with over half the ship decompressed. The Halifax was presumed dead & left behind as the Federation fleet pressed on to Cardassia.
Zaia, the sole surviving doctor, managed to prevent more deaths amongst the survivors and got them to the escape pods before the ship depressurised completely from the hull leaks, despite a broken leg. After that, she was put onto a starbase for a few months while waiting for a position to become available. She was eventually assigned to the USS Pickman, a search and rescue vessel.
Zaia is friendly and compatible, with a straight forward attitude to most things - she says what she means and has little patience for people who obfuscate or beat around the bush. She enjoys her work, possessing a good bedside manner and a natural zeal for medicine that could take her far.
Zaia is fairly tall and has long black hair, typically kept in a ponytail. Her eyes are light brown. She is in good physical condition, apart from an almost unnoticeable limp.
