 Charina  Nyv
 Race: Trill (joined)
Gender: Female
 Age: 76 (112)
Date of Birth: 2303
Place of Birth: Trill Home world
Height: 150cm / 5' Weight: 45 / 100lbs
Eyes: Pale Blue HAIR: Graying, if not silver, long and tied into a respectful braid.

Appearance & Attitude:
GENERAL APPEARANCE: Charina is of unimposing build, quite short and very slender. Her face is beginning to show signs of age, with her eyes growing tired and her spots losing much of their color. She is nonetheless in good health, with if not vibrancy in her steps, then at least vigor. She has a gentle presence, the type of stance and mannerisms that lets her fade into the background of a room unnoticed.

PERSONALITY PROFILE:

Charina has well out-grown the rebellious instincts of youth, retaining only the strength of will to be who she is, regardless of pressures around her. She is stubborn as a blood-hound, often hanging on to events long past and gone. She is open-minded but has her opinions, rarely lacking one in even the most obscure of subjects, nor does she shy away from sharing it, solicited or not. Nyv can be annoying at times, determined to do things her way, and firm in the belief that she knows best. This should not be misinterpreted as a forceful personality, however, she can be quite content to remain in the background, the unnoticed cog that makes the clock tick.

If anything, other crewmembers may find it hard to keep the hierarchy around her; Charina's age and experience granting her a higher standing than her actual rank permits. She will rarely defer to superior officers as 'sir' or 'ma'am' unless in an official setting.

PERSONALITY QUIRKS:

While it is possible that, in the event of an imminent core-breach or similar disasters, Charina may hurry her steps, she has never been known to run, likening it to speaking before thinking.

Her favorite saying is Tirrion: "Peace is many voices arguing."

INTERESTS/HOBBIES:
Linguistics, obviously. Literature. The older the better. She is particularly fond of old-earth plays. Loves the theatrical representations from other old cultures as well, and will talk at length about them. Has some basic interest in history and archaeology as well.

BIO/BACKGROUND:

Charina's family lived in one of the true metropolis on Trill, near a market square where everyone passing to and from the space port would wander. She early became interested in aliens and their cultures, but above all, their languages intrigued her. Spending long days just wandering around the crowds, listening to people, her love for the linguistics was born.

Her parents early realized her potential talents, pushing her to attend the more culturally inclined academy on a nearby Federation Star Base, in addition to putting her on the academic track for joining. She picked up Federation standard as her first other language, becoming bilingual in less than a year. After that, her career was sealed.

Three languages later, and intensive years as an Initiate, she was chosen to be joined. The basis for the decision rested on two skills, that of languages, and her doggedly strong stubbornness. The reason for the need for a stoically calm and stubborn host came from the first, and only other host of the Nyv symbiont.

Racheem Nyv was a pilot, who died not many years after joining in a freak shuttle accident. The piloting skills have been transferred to Charina, to some degree, but so has a very strong dislike for shuttles. In addition, Racheem was something of an impulsive character, preferring to think on his feet and acting quickly rather than thoughtfully. Charina Nyv struggles with this impulsiveness at times, not yet fully contained even after all these years.

Successfully joined, Nyv took up work as a professional translator, eventually making her way from translating texts, to speech, and from there to the halls of diplomacy, serving the federation in its negotiations with alien races. That was where she met the greatest benefactor of her career, and also the man who she fell in love with, and married.

In 2326, the honorable Commander and Diplomat representing the United Federation of Planets, David Yen was serving as mediator in a particularly daunting set of peace talks, having Nyv as his aide in attempting to establish truce between two warring races. They spent three arduous months cooperating to coax, compel, and coerce the aliens into signing a mutual trade pact, which stands even today. The following celebrations also saw light to their feelings for each other, and the wedding was performed right there and then by an attending Captain, with witnesses being the former enemies-now-trade partners.

Following this, it was only natural that she became his full-time partner and aide. Serving the federation together, Nyv was granted an acting rank in Star Fleet to make her job easier. Around this time she also saw birth to the couple's three children, a daughter and two sons, one of which is serving in Star Fleet.

Having taken 'safer' assignments during her children's youth, once the last of them moved out on their own, circa 2358, Charina's love for languages and her mastering of the more common ones drove her to seek out the front lines of exploration. She signed on to an exploring Federation Starship as Chief Diplomatic officer, with her husband's blessings, serving with distinction for several years. Her proficiency with both diplomacy and linguistics blossomed, and it was with some sadness she returned to the heart of the Federation to rejoin her husband, after nearly 9 years apart. She found the love and passion had never faded.

A few more years serving the diplomatic corps, then came the year of hell. The dominion war broke out and spread through the sectors of the federation like a plague. That was the year her husband died. Heartbroken, Charina returned to her homeworld, shutting herself off from all things she had loved before, not caring that the Federation she once served was fighting for its very existence. She threw out her granted rank and nearly resigned from the fleet, taking an undefined Leave of Absence. The Trill government gave her a pity-assignment, translating more-or-less official documents in their service, a paper-pushing job she neither enjoyed nor cared about. At the end of the war, she was summoned back - figuratively kicking and screaming - to aid in Dominion Negotiations, her first assignment in a long time. Finding her old flame again, Charina decided to dedicate the last years of her life pursuing linguistics and diplomacy.
