III. Rank Structure and Promotion Criteria
           


A. Second Lieutenant. Upon enlisting you will be commissioned a 2nd Lt.. You must complete                USVAC Basic Training and your occupational specialty school at this rank.



B. First Lieutenant. To be promoted to 1st Lt. you must have 1 month time in service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. If you are a pilot, you must complete your aircraft specialty school at this rank.



C. Captain. To be promoted to Cpt. you must have 2 1/2 months time in service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. You must complete the Basic Officer Course at this rank.



D. Major. To be promoted to Maj. you must have 4 months time in service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. This promotion is not automatic like the previous ones. You must accumulate a total number promotion points that is determined by PERSCOM for each OSC. The monthly points for each OSC is listed on the PERSCOM home page. The breakdown of the points is as follows: 20 points for awards and 30 points given by your commander for a maximun total of 50 points. You need to look at your personal service record often to ensure that everyone is correct so that you don't lose promotion points. If you find a discrepency, notify PERSCOM immediately.




E. Lieutenant Colonel. To be promoted to Lt. Col. you must have 6 months time in service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. Again, this promotion is determined by points which are listed on the PERSCOM home page. You must complete the Advanced Officer Course at this rank.




F. Colonel. To be promoted to Col. you must have 8 months time in service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. In addition to this you must have held 1 command or 1 staff postion. You will be selected by a promotion committee to be promoted to this rank.



G. Brigadier General. To be promoted to Brig. Gen. you must have 10 months time is service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. In addition to this you must have held 1 command and 1 staff position. You will be selected by a promotion committee to be promoted to this rank. You must complete the Air Corps College at this rank.



H. Major General. To be promoted to Maj. Gen. You must have 12 months time in service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. In addition to this you must have held 2 commands. You will be selected by a promotion committee to to be promoted to this rank.



I. Lieutenant General. To be promoted to Lt. Gen. You must have 14 months time in service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. In addition to this you must have held 1 command as a Colonel or higher. You will be selected by a promotion committee to be promoted to this rank.




J. General. To be promoted to Gen. you must have 16 months time in service and 1 month time holding the previous rank. In addition to this you must have completed the Command and Staff College. You will be selected by a promotion committee to be promoted to this rank.

Note: Waivers can be made by promotion authorities to fill slots as needed

Note: Acceptance to the Command and Staff College is not guaranteed. It is a highly selective school. You are encouraged to begin applying for this course when promoted to Colonel.
