Winslow Homer Biography He again visited Europe (1881) for about 2 years and spent time at Tynemouth, a small fishing village on the north east coast of England. This is where he found his most important theme - mankind's adventure and struggle with the seas to which he devoted the rest of his life. This time when he returned to the United States he chose Prout's Neck in Maine, an isolated fishing village as his permanent home though he made trips to the Adirondacks in the summer months and to Florida, Bermuda and Nassau in the winter months. The subjects of his paintings were now much bolder depicting the struggle of the fishermen with the sea, hunters, sponge divers and sailors. Some of the excellent paintings from this time are "Crab Fishing", "The Fog Warning", "Kissing The Moon", "The Gulf Stream", "The Blue Boat" and "Early morning after a storm at sea". By 1900 Homer had become well known for his watercolors and oil paintings. He died at the age of 74, in 1910. |
