| LEONARDO DA VINCI BIOGRAPHY THE ARTIST Leonardo da Vinci, is considered as one of the greatest masters of the High Renaissanceperiod. A painter, sculptor, architect, engineer and scientist, He was a man of varied interests. Though his contributions in the field of art and painting are just a handful he accounts for few of the finest paintings ever made in the history of art and painting. His paintings influenced Italian art for more than a century after his death. His innovations in the field of anatomy, optics, hydraulics, geometry, meteorology and geology have been remarkable. That's why he is also known as the Renaissance man. There are three periods in Leonardo's biography: The Florentine period (1469-82); the Milanese period (1483-99); the Nomadic period (1500-19). THE FLORENTINE Period (1469-82) BIRTH Leonardo Da Vinci was born in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near Florence, in 1452. He was the illegitimate son of a wealthy Florentine notary and a peasant woman. His father's name was Ser Piero and mother was Caterina. His father took custody of the little child shortly after his birth. In the mid-1460s the family had settled in Florence. (continued to next page) |
