J.M.W. Turner Biography
English painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) went to the Royal Academy School of art at London when he was only 15 years old.Turner is considered the most popular English romantic artist who left more than 19,000 watercolors, drawings, and oilpaintings to the British museums. He painted romantic landscapes full of mystery and atmosphere. He is considered an "impressionist" before that term manifested in works of French painters.Turner studied the science of light and colour, the theory in particular that yellow was closest colour to the production of white light in painting. He is known and admired for portraying the transcendent power and turbulence of nature in his paintings of landscapes and storms at sea.
He lived a quiet secluded life with his elderly father and maintained a large gallery in London. The impact of the Industrial Revolution and its effects on social and economic transformations are seen in his paintings of machine subjects in Rain, Steam, Speed and Snow Storm, Steamboat off a Harbour's Mouth. The outstanding painting genius bridged the gap between English traditional landscape art and free flowing painting style exploring nature through light and color. |
