Duplin County, North Carolina is about 40 miles southwest of Smithfield in Johnson County, North Carolina, where Emanuel Dees, Mark's grandfather died and Needham Dees was born. Mark and Sarah (Sally) lived in South Carolina and left there and went to Kentucky in 1811, when Mark was 31 years of age.
