| SAMARKAND Well, since one of the only guide books I have (and probably exist) on Uzbekistan is called "The Golden Road to Samarkand", it's safe to assume that Samarkand is a very important city in Uzbekistan. And it is - it was the center of Tamerlane's kingdom (the great Uzbek conqueror) and the city is still full of his influence. I visited three important sites - The Registan, Bibi Khanum's Mosque, and Shah-I-Zinda. I also have one page devoted to Islamic designs. They are pretty stunning. Unfortunately, it was mostly cloudy on the day we went to these sites, so the pictures aren't the best. I also visited a museum, but I have no pictures. The museum was pretty interesting, but the conditions of the museum were pretty bad. |

| The Registan The picture of me standing in front of it looks fake, doesn't it? Too bad it wasn't such a nice day... |

| Shah-I-Zinda: the holiest site in Samrakand. Three visits to the site is supposed to be equivalent to one visit to Mecca. | ||||||||||||||||
