Ancients heavy industry.
The Tray of keys.
All stargate expedition teams and free Jaffa are instructed to acquire these devices if they are ever encountered!
There is little evidence of heavy industrial facilities or factories on any Ancients site including Atlantis. The key appears to be an ancients device called the Tray of keys.
The Jaffa Rebels and the Tok'ra have heard of such things and indicate that these are extremely important. Some have appeared in Goa'uld hands. They are the difference between being a Goa'uld system lord or just a vassal to one.
These items appear to be a blue rounded tray on a white pedestal. The tray is 80 cm in diameter and has four buttons equally distributed around the underside of the rim. It has and a row of 120 small lights a round the rim. One button is gold the others are jade green.
First an item is placed on the tray and the gold button pressed. This is the index item and will be copied. The tray can support up to 300 kg. Heavier items can be supported at by trestles so that a large item is touching the tray top. The limit is about two tonnes. The object must fit inside the rings of a ring transporter.
Depressing the button 180 degrees from the gold button dispenses an integration key.
Then a mix of raw material placed on the tray and the first button on the right is pressed. The raw materials are quickly scanned. A green curved bar indicates how useful an item placed in the device will be as raw materials. The lights indicate which element in the periodic table is missing. The goa'uld system lords know many recipes for the ancients technologies even if they don?t know how to make them. The goa'uld also know that broken items make the best raw materials for replacement items. Thus they collect any damaged weapons, crystals and spent power slugs.
The user then takes the tested raw materials and the integration key to a ring transporter. Placing the raw materials and the key in the centre of the rings and cycling them once. Instead of transporting the items the rings simply re-assembles the matter in the raw materials into a new and exact copy of the item. The number of items produced is dependant on the amount of raw materials. If the supply is inadequate for any large item then the activation of the rings will produce ten perfectly smooth balls of raw materials. It is believed that the Ancients designed the thing to make balls because they can be rolled aside allowing the transporter rings to be used while more materials are found.
Each time the unit is used for small items it may request some extra resources. When the rings cycle there is a 12% chance it will produce a jug of blue fluid. If the fluid is pored on the tray it will drain rapidly into a hidden reservoir. It is believed that this replenishes the supply of integration keys and perhaps fuels the device. There is also a 0.1% chance that the device will demand a lot of extra material and when this is provided and cycled, the rings will produce a whole new pedestal and jug in addition to the requested items.
If the forth key is pressed while the index item is on the tray; the tray will beep and produce two integration keys. The second key is a lighter blue. If these are used together all the materials placed in the rings will be fused together into a single large object. The index items shape and constituency is duplicated but not its size. Hull plates, structural beams, airframes and other very large items are produced this way.
The transporter rings can make energy into matter so why are raw materials needed? Thor thinks that the raw materials reduces the energy demand and thus reduces ware and tare on the ring transporters themselves.
Lastly a Tok'ra agent reports that a certain item in a ring transporter system if used as the index item will trigger the production of a Large rack of parts. When assembled these parts make a whole new replacement ring system. There is also a goa'uld belief, guess or rumour, that a DHD has a similar component that if used as the index item may make a complete DHD.
The integration keys may not work on Asgard teleportation units but may work on the Atlantis systems and the Obelisk transporter on the Sodan world. There may even be a tray of keys at Atlantis. Unfortunately it's a big place to search.
Play balance. If this technology falls into the players hands the players government will demand that it be placed in a secure place and the keys are transported back and forth to a secure rings transporter. The players loose the tray of Keys but gains a bonus to getting ancients technology when needed.
