Chapter 1 Time seemed to stand still and watch the tragidy unfold. The truck's tires squealed, as it tried to stop. AJ managed to push Carly out of the truck's path but AJ wasn't so lucky. The truck struck him. He flew up in the air and landed with a hard thud, tumbling across the pavement; bones breaking and skin tearing. For a moment, no one could move. Carly moaned loudly, dazed by what had happened. She wasn't even sure what had just happened until she heard the screams of several by-standers. She sat up slowly, looking around until she found the reasons for the screams. "AJ!" Carly screamed, rushing to his side. AJ lay facedown on the street, blood streaming a woung on his head and his arm was twisted beneath him. "AJ," Carly whispered near his ear, afraid to touch him for fear he would break. "Don't move him!" an observer yelled. Her trembling hand paused and she moved it away. The commotion outside filtered into the Grille. Skye and Sonny noticed a panicked woman relating the events to several people near the entrance. "The truck..couldn't stop in time..poor man," she sobed, as one of the waiters handed her a glass of water. "Someone must have been hit," Skye observed, turning her attention back to Sonny. Sonny didn't seem to care. "That's what it sounds like," he replied, as he watched the other Grill customers rush outside. He lowered his menu, "Are you ready to order?" "You're not the least bit curious about what's going on outside?" Skye questioned, fascinated by Sonny Corinthos. He flashed her a dimpled smile. "Nope. It has nothing to do with me. Just some poor man, who got run down by a truck. He was probably drunk and not paying attention to where he was going." * * * * * Skye smiled, before she could stop herself. She had to admit that his 'tell it like it is' attitude was another turn on for her. Sonny noticed the smile and for the first time all evening his curiosity was peaked. "What's that smile for?" "Hmm?" Skye murmured. "What's so funny?" he repeated. "Oh, I was just thinking about how much we have in common." Before Sonny could comment on her statement, his phone started ringing. "I'm sorry," he apologized, reaching into his jacket for the phone. "Yeah," he answed, clearly annoyed with his caller. "What!" he yelled, rising from his seat. "I'm inside the Grille right now!" Skye left her seat as well and followed him outside. "What happened?" They stepped outside in time to see AJ being loaded into the ambulance with Carly by his side. Sonny and Skye both gasped in shock. Skye turned away quickly, not wanting to be seen by her sister. Sonny and Carly's eyes locked briefly but she quickly returned her attention to AJ. The ambulance door was shut and Sonny watched it speed away. Skye turned and noticed how upset Sonny seemed to be. "Are you alright? I didn't think you liked AJ?" Skye asked. "I have to go," Sonny said. "I understand. I need to get to the hospital," Skye said. "You need a ride?" Sonny asked. He was going there anyway. "Thanks, but I have my car," Skye explained. "Okay, I'm sorry dinner had to end this way." "So am I." Sonny kissed her cheek before climbing in his limo that had just pulled up to the curb. Skye stood there. The shock of seeing her sister alive and well and all grown up. Tears flooded her eyes, as images of a scared child haunted her. "You promise you'll come back for me?" Caroline asked, watching her sister closing the last of her suitcases. "Yes, as soon as I find a job or my birth parents." "Your birth parents?" Caroline didn't understand. "See sweetie Virginia and Mitch aren't my real mommy and daddy." "Really?" Caroline asked, her eyes wide with shock and excitement but still not fully understanding completely what that meant. "Yes, really," Skye said, tickling her sister. Caroline's laugher filled the air and Skye's eyes filled with tears. There had been very little laugher in this house. She truly hated having to leave Caroline here alone with *him*. Six months ago Skye had been searching for clothes that her mother had borrowed. In her nother's closet, instead of the clothes, she had came across her and Caroline's adoptions papers. Skye knew Caroline was too young to know she was adopted too but Skye promised herself that she would tell Caroline when she was older. Skye had been so lost in her thoughts that she hadn't noticed that Caroline's laugher had turned into sobs. "What's the matter?" "That means you're not really my sister," Caroline realized. "Shh, Caroline, I'm always going to be your sister." "But if my Mommy and Daddy aren't your Mommy and Daddy, then that means..." Caroline reasoned. Skye bit her lip to keep it from trembling, as a tear slid down her cheek. "Caroline, you and I are family. We always have been and we always will be. I promise." "Sisters forever?" Caroline asked, sniffling. "Forever and ever," Skye promised. ~*~End of Flashback~*~ Skye wiped away the tears that had fallen. She had given up hope of ever seeing Caroline again. "I'm sorry," she whispered, as the wind whistled around her. * * * * * AJ was wheeled into the ER. The Quartermaines were already waiting. All hell broke loose when they noticed Carly was by his side. "What the hell are you doing here?" Edward yelled. "Get away from my grandson!" Carly was still numb from shock. She released AJ's hand as he was wheeled away. "What happened?" Alan asked, "This truck came out of nowhere. I didn't see it," Carly said, not able to look any one of them in the eyes. "Oh God," Monica cried, as her hand went to her mouth. Alan put his arm around her waist to steady her. "What were you doing with him anyway?" Edward wanted to know. "I wasn't with him," Carly said, finally meeting Edward's eyes. "I was on my way out of the Grille..." Carly trailed off. She closed her eyes and images of Sonny and Skye flashed through her mind. "I was leaving and he called out to me. He said he need to talk to me. I didn't want to talk to him. I was in a hurry and I started to cross the street..." Carly paused, when she heard the collective sighs of shock. She met all of their eyes before finishing. "He pushed me out of the way. He saved my life." Sonny had walked into the ER in time to hear the end of what she had said. "This is all your fault," Edward yelled. "Father please," Alan said. "You need to calm down or you'll have another heart attack!" Monica looked at Carly's pale face. She knew Carly was in shock. "Carly, you need to let someone examine you." "No, I'm fine. I wasn't hit, I just have some cuts and bruises." "Still, you should be examined," Alan agreed. "You two should be more worry about your SON than her. She is the reason he's here in the first place," Edward bellowed. "Edward!" Alan and Monica yelled in unison. "Have you forgotten who this woman is?" "This isn't the time or the place for this father! AJ is my only concern for the moment. And he should be yours as well. Now if he's not, then I think you should leave!" Alan hissed. Edward was shocked into silence. He opened and close hisd mouth a few times. "I think I will go call the house and check on Lila. But if you really love your son, you'll keep this woman away from him," he said, gesturing to Carly. Carly hugged herself, suddenly feeling cold. She turned in the direction of the door and her eyes fell upon Sonny, as he walked in. She felt weak and dizzy. The room was spinning and her vision became blurred. Darkness closed in around her until she was consumed by it. Carly could hear his voice, she just could speak. "Carly," Sonny called to her. Alan carried her to a nearby examining room. * * * * * Skye walk in the ER. She spotted Sonny watching her father working on a patient. As she got closer, she saw that it was Caroline. "What happened?" Skye asked, concerned for her sisters wellbeing. The concern and worry in Skye's voice for his wife didn't go unnoticed by Sonny. "Why do you care what happened to her?" Sonny asked. Skye looked away from Sonny suspicious eyes and into the room where her father was examining Caroline. I'm here, Caroline. Skye said in her mind. "I asked you a question. Why are you so concerned for my wife?" "Wife?" Skye asked, suddenly feeling sick at the thought that she had slept with her sister's husband. |
