Chapter 2

"Wife?  She's your wife?" Skye asked, looking back at her sister with a heavy heart.

"Yeah," Sonny answered, confused by Skye's sudden interest in his wife.  "I told you that I was married last night," he reminded her.

"I remember," Skye whispered, turning away from him.  Her heart was pounding so hard she was sure that he could hear it.  All the men, she would have to sleep with her sister's husband.  Way to go,' Skye scolded herself.

"Skye, are you alright?" Sonny asked, moving closer to her.  She wasn't expecting him to be standing so close and she fell into him when she turned.

"Yes I'm fine," she whispered, as their eyes locked.

Carly moaned, as she opened her eyes to the bright overhead lights.  Memories of AJ came back to
her in a rush.

"Take it easy," Alan advised, keeping her from getting off the bed.

"What happened?" Carly asked, her head still a little cloudy.

"You fainted."

"AJ!  How is he?" Carly asked, sitting up quickly.

"Calm down, Carly.  AJ is still in surgery."

"He's going to be okay, right?"

Alan only offered her a sad, unsure smile.  He couldn't promise anything.  He was a doctor and he knew that his son was in serious condition and things were looking bad.  "He's in good hands.  All we can do is wait for now."

A tear ran down Carly's cheek hearing Alan words.  She knew that AJ could die and if he did, it would be in her place.  She should have been the one hit by the truck .  Not him.  Her thoughts were shattered, when her eyes fell upon her sister and her husband.  They were in a very passionate embrace.  Carly's heart ached with longing for them both.

"You don't look alright," Sonny said, as Skye tried to pull away from him.

"I'm fine, just worried about my brother," Skye lied.

"I though you said he hated you."

"Well, the whole Quartermaine family hates me, with the expectation of my father and grandmother but that doesn't mean I want to see any of them hurt or dead!" Skye yell, pulling herself out of Sonny's embrace.

"I know that," Sonny replied, unsure what had Skye so nervous all of a sudden.

"Look, I'm fine Sonny.  Really!"  Skye asserted, trying to calm her pounding heart.  Caroline was in Port Charles and married to Sonny.
Why Sonny?

Sonny and Skye held each others gaze, until Alan's voice broke the tense silence.  "Sonny."

They turned in Alan's direction.  "How is she?"

"She's fine.  She's asking for you."

Sonny hesitated.  He wasn't sure if he was ready to face Carly but he swallowed his nervousness and walked toward the door.

"Thanks."

"She really needs some rest," Alan warned.

"I won't stay long."

Sonny walking into the room slowly.  She looked weak and fragile to him.  "Carly."

"You're talking to me?" Carly asked.  When she had told Alan to tell him that she wanted to see him, she never expected him to come.

"I was worried," Sonny admitted.

"Why?" Carly asked, hopeful.

"Because you're still my wife."

Carly's heart fell.  What if he had moved on?  And with Skye.  "Well, I'm fine," Carly repeated, her eyes closed.

"I didn't know you were back in town."

"I returned this morning," Carly said, knowing what she needed to say but not sure if this was the right time to bring it up.  "Sonny?"

He met her eyes.  "I'm sorry.  I know that doesn't mean much but you have to believe me when I say that I never meant for you to go to jail.  I just wanted us to be together and safe.  A family."  The tears were flowing freely down her cheeks.

"I know," Sonny whispered.  Deep down he knew the reasons Carly had betrayed him, he just couldn't get past them.  Even now anger raged in his soul, along with his love for her.

"But you can't forgive me, can you?" Carly asked.

"No I can't.  At least not yet," Sonny whispered regretfully.  He turned and headed for the door.

Carly watched him walk out of the room.  She wiped away her tears.  A part of her understood where Sonny was coming from.  She knew how he felt about trust and loyalty and she had broken both.  She hugged herself, as sobs racked her body.

Skye watched Sonny leave Caroline's room.  She was about to go to her when she heard his voice.

"Skye, dear, how did things go with Corinthos last night?"  Edward asked his granddaughter.

Skye closed her eyes, as images of her and Sonny flashed through her mind.  She was sure that her face had turn bright red.  "Fine.  I'm making process.  That ELQ stock will be back in the family before you know it," Skye lied.

"Good.  That's what I like to hear"

"Has there been any news on AJ yet?" Skye asked, trying desperately to change the subject.

"No not yet.  Alan and Monica are more concerned about the person who put him there, than their own son!" Edward said, pointing in the direction of Caroline's room.

"Her?  Grandfather, AJ was hit by a truck."  Skye was confused by Edward's hatred for her sister.  "What does this have to do with her?"

"That woman has.." Edward forgot his anger when he saw Tony step off the elevator.  He rushed to where Monica and Alan were waiting.

"How is AJ?" he asked.

Tony sighed tiredly.  "He survived the surgery."

"Thank God!" Monica cried, as Alan held her.  He knew that Tony had more news by the look on his face.

"There's more?" Alan asked, hugging Monica a little tighter.

"I'm afraid so Alan."

Caroline sat on the beach, tears streaming down her cheeks.  Skye had only been gone a few days and she already missed her desperately. She hoped that she returned for her soon.  Her parents were like brewing storms, she never knew when they would strike.  Today was one of those days.  They was been fighting all morning.

She looked out at the ocean wishing she could escape from her life.

"Caroline?" Carly Roberts yelled.

Caroline turned in the direction of her friend's voice.  "Hi."

"Want to come over?" Carly asked.

"Sure."  Caroline smiled wanting to get as far away from Mitch as possible.

"Caroline.  Get in here, now!" Mitch yelled from the porch.

Both girls jumped at the anger in his voice.  Caroline felt tears rushing to her eyes.  "I gotta go," she whispered, as she ran to the house.

Carly watched Caroline go.  She so desperately wanted to help her friend.  Mr. Benson was a bad man.

Skye walking into Carly's room.  She could tell that she was having a nightmare of some kind.  "Please don't," she murmured in her sleep.

"Caroline," Skye whispered gently.

"Please don't hurt me.  I swear I won't tell!" Carly begged.

"Caroline, wake up!"  Skye shook her gently.

Carly screamed, as her body jerked itself awake.  She was disoriented for a moment.

"Caroline, you're okay.  It's over," Skye whispered.

"Why do you care?" Carly asked bitterly.

"I care because you're my sister."

"No, I'm not.  You never came back for me," Carly stated, in a childlike voice that make Skye tremble.

Tears filled Skye's eyes as she looked at Caroline.  She was still the same frightened child she remembered.

"Why did you leave me there?" Carly asked, tears filling her eyes as well.

"I didn't have any other choice," Skye said.
