Chapter 5

"You knew too?" Alexis whispered.  She leaned against the door for support.  The one person that she thought would never lie or keep secrets from her was Jax, yet he had done just that.  "Why didn't you tell me Jax!" Alexis said angrily.

Jax stared at Alexis, his heart breaking for her.  She was hurting and confused.  He shouldn't have slept with her.  She was going through so much, she didn’t need to deal with the implications of their lovemaking as well.  He walked to her.  "Alexis, I'm sorry.  But I didn't know about Hannah being in the car until Chloe told me today in the park...." Jax stopped when Alexis closed her eyes at the mention of Chloe's name.

"Chloe!" Alexis said, her jealously poorly concealed.  "How the hell does she know more about my husband, than I do?  And I thought you two weren't even on speaking terms."

Alexis knew she had no right to be jealous where Jax was concerned, but she couldn't help it.  She wanted Chloe out of Jax’s life completely.

Jax raised an eyebrow at Alexis.  He heard the jealousy in her voice and he wanted to ease her fears.  "Chloe and I are still friends and she happened to mention Ned and Hannah's accident.  Like you, I was stunned that they had been together," Jax whispered, seeing Alexis’s eyes fill with tears.

"I'm sorry Jax, I should have known you wouldn't keep something like this from me!" Alexis sobbed.

"Alexis, it's alright," Jax said, taking her into his arms.

“I meant what I said before.  I never meant to hurt you," Alexis said making eye contact with him.  She wanted him to see that she was telling the truth.

"I know that.  I love you Alexis.  But I'm sorry about last night.  I should have stopped.  We shouldn't have made love," Jax whispered.

Alexis looked at him in confusion.  "Jax, what are you saying?  You just told me that you love me!" Alexis said in a hurt voice.

"I do," Jax said, pulling her back into his arms.  "I knew you were hurting last night and you weren’t thinking clearly," Jax whispered.

"Jasper Jacks, don't you dare say that I didn't know what I was doing," Alexis replied angrily.

"Alexis..." Jax tried.

"Jax, I've been in love with you for a long time, I was just too afraid to admit it.  I thought that if I didn't say it, the feeling would go away," Alexis admitted quietly.

Jax didn't know what to say.  He had also been in love with Alexis for a long time but he never thought she felt the same way.  They stared at each other intensely.  The truth had been spoken and there was no taking it back.  Alexis realized in that moment that she was in love with two men.

Before they could continue their conversation, Alexis’s cell phone started ringing.  Fearing that it was hospital she answered.

"Hello?"

"Alexis it's me, Emily."

“Emily is something wrong?  Is it Ned?" Alexis asked.

"NO!  No Alexis, Ned is fine.  In fact he’s awake and asking for you.  I thought that you would want to know," Emily explained.

"Thanks Emily.  Tell Ned that I’ll be right there," Alexis replied before pushing the ‘End’ button on her phone.

"I have to go."

"I heard," Jax replied.  He had a sinking feeling that Alexis was about to walk out of his life forever.  They stood staring at each other before Alexis finally moved.  She surprised Jax by kissing him passionately on the lips.  Jax parted his lips without thinking, letting her tongue invade his mouth.  Alexis ended the kiss just as suddenly as it began and walked out of the penthouse leaving Jax to wonder about their future, if, in fact, they even had one.

Sonny and Carly stared at each other while his phone continued to ring.

"Go on, answer it Sonny, it might be important," Carly said.

Sonny ignored the phone and walked closer to Carly.  "Nothing is more important than this," Sonny whispered.

"Sonny, please don't," Carly begged.

"Carly are you really going to leave after what happened between us this morning?"

"Sonny, this morning was a goodbye..." Carly whispered.

"It didn't felt like a goodbye to me," he challenged.

"Too much has happened between us.  I can't stay.  I need a fresh start."

"With Jason?” Sonny asked bitterly.  He always knew Jason had a piece of his wife’s heart.

"Yes."

"So that' it?" Sonny replied.

"I guess so.  I’ll call you when we get settled with the new address, where Alexis can send the divorce papers."

"Yeah, you do that." Sonny said walking toward the door, not wanting Carly to see the pain in his eyes.  "Be happy, Carly.," Sonny whispered, before walking out of the penthouse.  Carly fell back down on the couch and cried even harder than before.

Alexis took a deep breath before pushing open Ned's door.  She didn't know what she was going to say to him or if he would be able to tell that she had been unfaithful.  But then a rush of anger swept through her when she remembered who Ned was in the accident with. Hannah Scott.

Alexis walked inside his room.  Ned was sleeping.  He looked so peaceful, she didn't have the heart to wake him.  She was about to leave when she heard him.

"You’re here," Ned whispered, his voice hoarse.

Alexis turned to find Ned's eyes open and watching her.  "Hi."

"Come here," Ned requested.

Alexis slowly walked to Ned's bedside.  "How are you feeling?"

"Like I was run over by an eighteen wheeler."

Alexis smiled slightly, relieved that he still had his sense of humor.  They looked at each.  There was so much that needed to be said, but neither of them was willing to go first.

Ten minutes later Ned broke the silence.  "I'm sorry, I didn't keep my promise, Lex."

"Ned..."  Alexis was cut off by Ned.

"Please let me say this.  I need you to understand something.  I meant to keep my promise.  I was going to be home at 7:00 but then I came across Hannah on the side of the road.  Her car had broken down and I couldn't just leave her there."

"Ned we can talk about this later.  You need your rest."

"No, I need you to know how much you mean to me.  I love you, Lex.  I know that I haven't been there for you, like I should have been lately and I need you to know how much I love you."

“We have a lot of things to talk about.." Alexis said feeling uneasy as Jax's face flashed across her mind.

"I know you’re right.  But I just wanted you to know that I love you and I never stopped.  Please tell me it isn't too late for us."

Alexis’s eyes filled with tears.  Ned loved her.  He had always loved her.  But somewhere along the way it had gotten lost on her.  Did she still feel the same way?

"I do love you Ned..." Alexis whispered through her tears.
