Chapter 6

Several weeks later....

Alexis walked through the park.  She hadn't been able to sleep and decided to try a walk, hoping it would clear her head.  Instead she was confused, nowmore than before.

Alexis sat down on a bench and looked up at the sky.  It was a clear night and she wished her thoughts were as clear as the night sky.

Lady Jane was on her late night walk when she spotted Alexis.  She smiled.  It always did her heart good to see her former daughter-in-law.

"Alexis," Lady Jane called happily.

"Lady Jane!" Alexis exclaimed, shocked to see her in town.  Jax hadn't mentioned that his parents were visiting.  "Hello," Alexis greeted, as Lady Jane pulled her into a warm, motherly hug.

"I didn't know you were in town."

"We arrived this morning to surprise Jax," Lady Jane replied.

“How is Ned?" Lady Jane asked concerned.

"He’s doing better.  In fact he’s coming home in a few days," Alexis replied.

Lady Jane noticed a sadness in Alexis’s eyes.  "Is everything all right, Dear?"

"Yes I’m fine," Alexis lied.

Lady Jane arched an eyebrow letting Alexis know that she didn't have to lie to her.  Alexis looked to the ground shamefully.

"Dear, if you don't want to talk about it..."

Alexis closed her eyes.  "I'm sorry Lady Jane, tt's just that I don't know where to begin."  Alexis sighed and sat back down on the bench.

"The beginning is usually a good place."

Alexis smiled at Lady Jane's reply.

"Can I ask you something?" Alexis questioned.

"Of course."

"Is it possible to be in love with two men at the same time?"

"When it comes to love, anything is possible."

"Well if that’s true, how are you supposed to choose?" Alexis asked desperately.

Lady Jane didn't answer Alexis's question right away  .She looked up at the night sky.  "The stars are beautiful tonight, aren't they?"

Alexis looked up and nodded.  "Yes."

"Are they still beautiful on a cloudy night?" Lady Jane asked.

Alexis thought about it.  She really wasn’t sure where Lady Jane was going with this conservation but she decided to humor her former mother-in-law.  "Yes they’re still beautiful."

"How do you know?  You can't see them," Lady Jane asked.

"I just believe that they do," Alexis answered, without thought.

"Then why don't you have the same faith in your heart?" Lady Jane whispered.

Alexis felt tears threaten to fall.  "Because I can't trust my heart."  She let the tears fall down her cheeks.

"Why?"  Lady Jane pushed.

"Because it doesn't know who I want anymore than my head does," Alexis said hiding her face in her hands.

"There’s one thing that I learned Alexis and it’s that the heart doesn't lie.  But sometimes our fears and insecurities get in the way and our hearts voice gets lost in all the other voices, like fear and doubt and pretty soon we don't recognize its voice anymore," Lady Jane said sadly.

Alexis dropped her hands form her face and looked at Lady Jane.

"I wish I could tell you who to choose, but I can't.  I know that you love them both.  I’ve seen the love you have for my son and for Mr. Ashton."

Alexis looked like so was going faint.  "I didn't say the other man was Jax," Alexis whispered.

"I know you didn't.  But Alexis I’ve known for a long time that you and Jax were in love with each other.  Probably before either of you realized it,” Lady Jane confessed.

"I do love Jax but I'm still in love with my husband," Alexis said truthfully.

"Then it's time to listen to your heart and have some faith in yourself.  Your heart will guide you if you have the courage to listen to it," Lady Jane said standing.  "It's getting late.  I better get home before John calls out the search party."

"Thank you," Alexis whispered.

"Your welcome.  I hope that I helped you, in some way."

"You did.  Goodnight."  Alexis kissed Lady Jane's cheek and gave her a hug.

"Goodnight."  Alexis watched her walk away.  She sat back down and looked up at the stars, wondering if her heart could truly lead her, like the stars guided those whom are lost.  Would her heart make the right decision for her?

Carly was looking up at the same sky as Alexis, just in a different place.  She was also searching for answers in them.  The last few weeks her and Jason had gotten settled in their new home.  Michael had loved his new home and school and it pleased Carly's to see her son so happy again.  Carly knew that Michael also felt the guilt of his baby sister’s death.

Flashback - Early afternoon

She heard a loud crash coming from her son’s room and rushed to find out what had happened.  She opened the door to find her son throwing books, toys and basically anything he could lift.

"Michael, stop it!" Carly cried.

"Leave me alone!" Michael screamed.  He had never yelled at his mother so violently before.  For a moment Carly thought he was about hit her with the baseball bat he was holding.

"Michael calm down.  Tell me what happened?" Carly asked in a calm voice, as she trembled on the inside.

"I killed my sister!" Michael confessed.  “Abby wouldn't be dead if wasn't for me and Trey’s stupid fight," Michael said, wiping tears of anger away.

Carly’s heart broke all over again, hearing her son's confession.  "No...No...Michael this isn't your fault!  I don't ever want to hear you stay that again!" Carly exclaimed, shaking her son.  Both were surprised by her actions.

"But Mamma, it is my fault.  If I hadn't been fighting, you wouldn't have left Abby," Michael sobbed.

"And if I had listened to your Uncle Sonny and stayed home, then Abby would still be alive," Carly whispered.

Michael looked at his mother in shock.  They stared at each other for a long time.  "Don't you see, all the "If I's" isn't going to bring back your sister," Carly explained as Michael fell into her arms and cried for the first time since Abby's death.

End Of Flashback

Carly's memory was interrupted by a pair hands around her waist.  "Aren't you cold?"Jason asked.

"Not really," Carly whispered, leaning against Jason’s strong chest.

"Couldn't you sleep?" Jason asked.  He had been worried about her since the move.  She barely ate or slept.  Jason knew that she missed Sonny and Port Charles.

"No.  Did I wake you?"

"No, I woke up and you weren’t there," Jason whispered in her ear.  "You still love him don't you?" he asked, already knowing the answer.

"Yes, I love Sonny, I just can't be with him," Carly said truthfully, even though she knew her words were hurting Jason.

He let go of Carly and walked back into the house, leaving Carly in tears.

Jax stumbled down the stairs, as the knocking grew more insistent.  "I'm coming," Jax called, finally reaching the door and opening it.

"Alexis?" he whispered, as she walked into his penthouse.

"Jax, I have something I need to tell you."
