USF Confederacy
Welcom to my USF Confederacy page.  I am just starting this Wooden ship model.  It is a "timbering set".  As you can see from the pictures, there are very few pre cut or manufactured parts.  The bulk of this set is 1/8 inch by 1 inch cherry wood.  There is no instruction book.  Everything is built by hand and taken from the full size plans.  The hull of this boat alone will be about 35 inches long.  It will finish out well over four feet.  Where I'm going to put it is still undecided:)  I have about 20 of the frames made.  I will post more pictures when I start putting them in the jig.  Enjoy the pictures.
One of the first things you find out about these timbering sets is that the slow and fast CA type glues model kit builders are used to using don't work very well.  Water based wood glues also are not a good idea due to warping.  Epoxy is working just fine.  Different curing times are nice.  I plan on using a epoxy with a 2 hour handling time when I start mounting the frames in the jig.  Even though there are no instructions for this timbering set, the plans are very good.

A  belt/disc sander and a scroll saw are helpful tools if you plan to make the move into scratch building.  Lots of clamps are useful too!

I am only glueing the frames to the jig at this point.  I will glue the keel assembly on after I have all the full frames mounted.  The half frames will be put on last.  I have 31 full frames made.  The dark strip of wood on the keel is ebony.

Except for the picture to the left, all the full frames have been glued into the jig.  There are about 22 half frames to make and mount onto the keel and then the final sanding and shaping of the hull will happen.
