Mermaids/Mermen are elegant beings of the waters.  They have the arms, chest, and head of a human, but the body of a long slender fish.  Their gills are located behind their ears and their fingers are webbed most of the time.  They are ignorant of the land creatures above and focus mostly on what is around them.  They are very timid creatures and unlike their cousins the sirens they cannot switch between mortal and mermaid/merman.  They come in all shapes and colors in the Valleys lake.  They are very curious but try their hardest to be subtle about it.  They rarely can be seen having chosen the bottom of the lake as their home in the western area of the lake where it is warm.  They are generally vegetarians, rarely eating meat except for on very special occasions and they swim in groups.  You will never catch a mermaid or merman swimming alone in the waters.  Elusive and quick they can outswim even a warm-bodied predator such as a mako or great white shark.  Each mermaid/merman has his or her own unique beauty and worship the waters, having to protect it much like an elf or a fairie would do to the forest.
