Manage and coordinate activities of the staff in the periodicals area. Managed the library circulation area. Previous experience as coordinator of a university specialized academic department library, and as a library branch manager.

Staff training and development

Coordinate development of the staff in the periodicals area through training in computer applications, procedures within the library automation system, use of Internet databases and resources, and periodicals area policies and procedures. Previously managed library circulation area staff.

Collection development

Participate in the development of general reference, as well as specific subject areas of the book collection: general works (encyclopedias, reference books, periodicals), auxiliary sciences of history (history of civilization, archaeology, general biography), education, music, science, and mathematics.  Coordinate and develop the library collection of periodicals and Internet resources.

Acquisitions and budget administration

Coordinate the development of the library periodicals collection, Internet resources and databases. Meet and confer with vendor and publisher representatives to stay abreast of new materials, products and services.  Manage acquisitions within the allocated periodicals budget and special grant funding for subscriptions to traditional materials and Internet resources.

Library instruction

Provide general and subject specific library orientations, detailing the scope and use of library materials, Internet resources and new technologies. Subject specific orientations have included: art history, dance history, literature and criticism, speech, botany, reading, movie reviews, Spanish language, legal research, economics, women’s issues, biological issues, controversial issues and English as a second language.  Provided library instruction for New Faculty Orientations and International Student Orientations. Instruct the LIBRARY 100: INTRODUCTION TO LIBRARY RESOURCES course, 1999 - 2000, 2002 - 2003, 2003 - 2004 as a stand-alone course and as part of the Learning Communities Program. Earned an Online Teaching and Learning Certificate from CSU, Hayward, 2001.

Develop bibliographies and library instructional aids/handouts

Developed bibliographies of Cerritos College Library holdings on various subjects, including: ceramics, sculpture, speech, personal names, Kate Chopin, Mexican Revolution, world regional geography, authors/biography and criticism, poetry and poets, career guidance, esl resources.  Handouts/presentations developed and/or revised: African American History, art history, biological issues, career and vocational guidance, child development, applied dental science, dance history, using indexes to periodicals, Library of Congress Classification System, library orientation exercise, discrimination in education, Spanish language resources, remote access to Internet-based resources, philosophy of education, ethics, study skills, gender differences in leadership styles.

Program development and writing

Participate in the development of campus mini grants to enhance areas of the library collection, such as the Faculty/Staff collection. Participated in Title III grant proposal writing.  Researched and developed programs for special events on campus, such as Women’s History Month, African American History Month, music performances, and staff development presentations. Collaborate with campus faculty on area/department accreditations and program review validation teams, producing written reports: Paralegal Program Accreditation, Library Technology Plan, Library Program Self-Study, Economics Department Program Review Validation Team Report.

Computer skills

Knowledge and experience working with computer operating systems: Macintosh, Windows 98 and XP; Internet searching: various search engines and web browsers; Internet resources: Ebscohost databases, GaleNet, Grove Art Online, Project Muse, SIRS Knowledge Source, NewsBank InfoWeb, ERIC, MELVYL, FirstSearch, online library catalogs, telnet, listservs, e-mail; library automation systems: DRA (Data Research Associates); software applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Front Page, Microsoft Works, HyperCard, Claris Works/Appleworks, Encore (music software). Manage the operation of the Data Research Associates (DRA) serials module at the Cerritos College Library.  Managed the circulation module of the DRA automation system. Participated in the review and selection of the Library automation system and online catalog.

Served as a California Community College library representative, meeting with California State Library representatives to discuss and provide input on the issue of California budget funding for community college library acquisitions. Final report culminated in the publication by Knutsen, Kirk L.  California community college library acquisition needs – 1995 – 2005: a study prepared pursuant to supplemental report language, item 6120-011-001, Budget Act of 1995–96.  Issue summary.  Sacramento: California Research Bureau, California State Library, [1996].

Cerritos College Foundation Development Council, 1994 – 1995

Participated in the development of fundraising events and activities for the Cerritos College Foundation. Established contacts and made arrangements for author Bernice Kert as keynote speaker for “An Afternoon Tea in the Library” event. Arranged for music to be performed at the same event and served as liaison to the Art Department to get student and faculty art exhibited and sold by silent auction at the “…Afternoon Tea…”. Contacted and negotiated music entertainment for the 1995 Annual Foundation Dinner held at the Clarke Estate, Santa Fe Springs, April 1995.
