The collection consists of some 1,305 pieces of African American sheet music dating from 1850 through 1920 and includes songs from the antebellum minstrelsy, the abolitionist movement, Civil War period, Reconstruction and the urbanization and northern migration of African Americans. Composers include James Bland, Ernest Hogan, Bob Cole, James Reese Europe, and Will Marion Cook. Titles in the 20th Century collection feature photographs of African American musical performers. The sponsors point out that these historic documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times.

The Historic American Sheet Music Project provides access to digital images of 3042 pieces from the collection, published in the United States between 1850 and 1920. It is part of a significant collection of 19th and early 20th century sheet music maintained at Duke University. Display includes the publication information for each image, as well as the Library of Congress cataloging information. Missing pages are also noted. Digital images of the actual music may be viewed in small (72dpi) or large (150 dpi) format. It is assumed that the music in this collection is in the public domain and may be copied for personal, research, or educational purposes. Anyone who wishes to use the music for public performance, broadcast or publishing, must assume all responsibility for searching property rights or copyright sources prior to performance.

ORB: The Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies
ORB is the result of a discussion that took place on MEDIEV-L in early 1995 and has developed into a major resource for research on the medieval period. Those who contribute articles to this resource are highly credentialed scholars in the areas of history and medieval studies. The site includes and encyclopedia of articles covering the early, high and late medieval periods, as well as Slavic and Russian resources maintained at the University of Pittsburgh. There are also articles covering religion and culture of the period. E-texts of new translations and/or translations of selected medieval works are also provided. The links to external sources include institutions and projects. Of special interest to students are the additional resources provided for researching and writing history papers. Instructors may appreciate the resources for teaching, with links to external sites for information, sample syllabi, maps, bibliographies, illustrations, etc. Although most of the links are valuable, those to individual works on the Library page need to be updated.
