Valencia Mitchell attended Mills College in Oakland, California where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. Valencia went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Library Science at the University of Southern California and a Master of Arts degree in Music at California State University, Long Beach.  She studied violin with Dr. Frederick Fickas in Los Angeles from age 10 until she went to Mills College, where she studied with Nathan Rubin. Upon her return to Los Angeles, she resumed studies with Dr. Fickas. Valencia is an active performer in a variety of music settings, solo, chamber ensembles, and orchestras.  Her credits also include performances on sound recordings and the televised 1993 Grammy Awards, appearing in an ensemble with Vanessa L. Williams. She has served as Concert Master two local Orchestras.  Valencia is also on the faculty at Cerritos Community College as a librarian.
