Summary
The purpose of my
sabbatical leave was to do directed study and research in online teaching and
learning, and the emerging issues of information ethics as they relate to
education in the online environment. This
study and research served to broaden my knowledge of the theories and methods of
online teaching and learning. I also reviewed web sites that would be useful in
library instruction.
My first goal was to
complete coursework leading to a certificate in the Extended and Continuing
Education Online Teaching and Learning Program at California State University,
Hayward. In addition to completion of the courses required for the certificate
in the CSU, Hayward program, I took coursework in the University of California,
Los Angeles Extension Online Teaching Program, focused on intellectual property
law and the Internet.
My second goal was to
survey and research issues related to information ethics. Today students are
increasingly expected to use a variety of resources in their studies and
research, including the Internet and World Wide Web. Instruction in the responsible and ethical use of these resources
will benefit students in their library research skills development.
The issues in information ethics researched included ownership:
information rights, intellectual freedom and intellectual property rights;
access: locating and acquiring information; and security: privacy,
confidentiality and integrity. The
breadth and variety of resources, including Internet and Web-based databases as
well as traditional sources available for research and study, makes the
communication of these issues in information ethics of prime importance to
instruction.
My third goal was to
review Internet and World Wide Web sites to gain increased knowledge and
awareness of the resources available for discipline and subject specific
research.
