Toshiba LaptopTOSHIBA Satellite 2805-S202 for Ubuntu Linux

Tried to explain some of the installations I tried in my Laptop.

I had this laptop for almost seven years now and it was lying idle since I bought a new one from DELL.After using it for so many years the machine was too slow to handle latest windows programs. Battery has dried up , when inquired with authorized reseller here with HCL , the price was almost equivalent for a new PC. Now running with direct power attachment.

Having a new broadband connection ,decided to make use of this idle laptop for my kids to learn things with fun. Having heard about lot about Ubuntu Linux decided to go for it.

Downloaded Ubuntu 7.04 from http://www.ubuntu.com/ . Copied the ISO image in a CD and first installed in my old PC with dual partition along with windows , but couldn't get that display set properly as windows seem to be large to fit within the display unit. Frustrated to find no fix for that, as it was some old cirrus logic crap, which I couldn't figure it out , as to how to fix.

When I started with my Toshiba Laptop my CD is getting not recognized , as I knew this earlier, then later on burnt ISO image in a DVD using "Free Easy Burner" program in Windows. Well before burning it in a DVD I tried installing Ubuntu from direct Internet connection found InstLux (http://instlux.sourceforge.net/) since my CDROM failed to load CD! . Take care to download as their are two variant one to install from CDROM and the other to download direct from Internet. Installed Instlux and on reboot it installed flawlessly , all during night (night downloads are unlimited from my ISP!). Morning I found my system was loaded with Ubuntu 6.06 LTS. I was very happy to see that all went well.

After few updates my system got rebooted all of a sudden and I could see all that famous kernel panic message!.I was fully frustrated as I've lost my working Windows as well as new Linux which I was happy about.

After some googly I found that giving acpi=force option (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=422017:) system got booted. This couldn't last long as after that I got the same message kernel panic

The last trick acpi=force didn't work anymore. Some posts recommended to run memtest , when I did that it ran for 3 days continuously with some millions of errors. Somewhere in a post I found that this could be of faulty RAM physically , so recommended to disconnect each ram and then test!. Viola I picked up from here removed 128 MB added RAM and then tried to load still was not able to make it up . Installed windows again and then again downloaded Instlux the second time and this time all went well after several days of hard work. I found the system was too slow with 128MB RAM , so tried to clean the removed ram and then fixed it again. This time as of now my system works good.
