 Audio

Welcome to the Audio section. Here you will find mp3 sound clips from her crossover classical career. Each clip is about 30-35 seconds long. I will try to put up as many clips from each album as I can over time (so keep checking back) and eventually may put up another album. Unfortunately my mp3 cutter program doesn't have the "fade in fade out" option, so they are a little "startstop" if you know what I mean. Sorry about that!

The Violin Player

Released in 1995, this was Vanessa-Mae's first classical crossover album which she recorded when she was 16. All of the songs are produced by Mike Batt, except for the second single Red Hot. Mike Batt has also produced for classical-crossover quartet Bond and produced classical crossover group The Planets' album. The singles were Toccata and Fugue, Red Hot, and a reggae version of Classical Gas.

 Tracklist

Toccata and Fugue in D minor
 Contradanza
 Classical Gas
 Theme From 'Caravans'
 Warm Air
 Jazz Will Eat Itself
 Widescreen
 Tequila Mockingbird
 City Theme
 Red Hot

Classical Gas (Reggae Version) - Classical Gas was released as the third single and somebody decided it would sound better with reggae. Well, I agree, it's very funky and cool, and a good change from the original.

Contradanza - This track is Vanessa doing good old rock. She plays the electric violin over riffing guitars and drums. This was recently covered by The Planets. Hmm, The Planets are produced by Mike Batt too! What a crazy coincidence that they would do the same song!

Red Hot - This was the second single. It has a very different sound from the rest of the songs because it's the only one not produced by Mike Batt. It stands out from the rest because of its futuristic sounds that I think it's trying to represent.
Toccata & Fugue in D Minor - This was the first single from the Violin Player. This clip is actually of the single version, because the album version is almost eight minutes long. Vanessa plays the song and carries the tune while the beats and music change style around it. Fasten your seatbelt (says the robotic voice in the song).

Storm

This was Vanessa-Mae's second classical crossover album released in 1997. The songs on this album have a huge range of styles from pop, to rock, latin flavor, classical, soothing melodies, and even a Donna Summers cover. Vanessa-Mae even sings on I Feel Love, Embrasse Moi, and I'm a Doun for Lack o' Johnnie. The singles were Storm and I Feel Love.

 Tracklist

 Summer Haze
 Storm
 Retro
 Bach Street Prelude
 Leyenda
 (I) Can, Can (You?)
 Happy Valley
 A Poet's Quest (For a Distant Paradise)
Embrasse Moi (You Fly Me Up)
 Aurora
 I'm a Doun For Lack o' Johnnie
 I Feel Love
 Hocus Pocus
 The Blessed Spirits

Storm - This is Vanessa-Mae's crossover version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Summer Presto. It's very fast and nonstop - it almost makes me tired just to listen to it!

 (I) Can, Can (You?) - This has to be the most fun song by Vanessa-Mae. It's her stomping pop rendition of the Can Can. It's almost silly and goofy. It also shows off her amazing talent because she varies the tune as she goes along with it, sort of playing with it and having fun. It's just a really fun cute song.
I Feel Love - This is her own version of Donna Summers'. It's a very good cover and includes a very cool violin break. This clip is actually of the violin part and not the singing, because I love that part so much. ;)
Hocus Pocus - This is Vanessa doing good ol' get down rock and roll. That's all that I can think to say about it is "get down rock and roll." It's really funky and hard.
Leyenda - This is a very flamenco-style influenced track, including rythyms from a Spanish guitar, a flamenco-style clapping beat, and shouts of "Whoo!" and "Ahlay!" here and there. The beats prgress and it becomes funkier and dancier as it goes along.
I'm a Doun for Lack o' Johnnie - This song was originally released as a single for her classical album "Tha Classical Album 1." Vanessa-Mae opens up by singing the words to this song, and then it flows into the violin piece. It's a very big and dramatic, beautiful song which almost sounds like a 'power ballad' for classical. Very good.

Subject to Change

This is her latest crossover album which was released in 2001. The songs on this album are diverse, but not in the jump-around way that Storm is, because they still all fit on the same album. Vanessa-Mae adds more vocals here with Yantra, Destiny, Love is Only a Game, White Bird, and Jamais. She even sings in Spanish and French. In Yantra, her vocals are added over to have a "choir" effect, and the harmonization is almost flawless. The singles were Destiny and White Bird.

 Tracklist

 Yantra
 White Bird
 Picante
 Destiny
 Night Flight
 Clear Like Ice
 Laughing Buddha
 Pasha
 Solace
 Love is Only a Game
 Deep South
 Jamais

Destiny - This song was released as a single, but there's quite a difference between the album version and the single version. First of all, the album version is almost seven minutes long. This song almost sounds like it used to have words, but now the tune is being played on a violin. I guess because it has a sort of 'pop' melody, it has verses and a chorus. The album version is very epic and could be the theme to a movie. It's a very dancey song that's the perfect fusion of violin and beats.
Deep South - This song is a sort of mellow dance track. It is basically the same tune over and over, but as it goes along it varies. I really like this song because it's not hyper dance, but sort of fades in slowly and then fades out slowly.
Night Flight - This song is so beautiful and soothing it's hard to describe. It's almost a sad melody. It starts off simple and then a few beats are added throughout the song, but the violin carries it and keeps it mellow. You must listen, but try not to let it drift you off to sleep.
Picante - This song is a short one, clocking in at only 2:58, but it packs a punch in that little time. It's a very latin influenced track, and it even sounds like a party. It switches from trumpets to a club beat break before continuing with the fun Latin sounds. It also includes some really funky violin effects.
Love Is Only a Game - Vanessa sings most of the part in Spanish in this one, and there is a little violin accompaniment here and there. It's a very cutesy song, with Vanessa singing "ting chink-a ting ting ting" along with the beat. It's just a cute little mid-tempo pop song.
White Bird - Jefferson Airplane originally did this song. Vanessa-Mae sings for most of the song, but she does some piziccato (plucking of the strings) between verses and plays near the end. It's an upbeat pop song about a lonely white bird. On other circumtances, I'm sure I would love this song because it's pretty catchy, but I hate sad animal stories! White bird doesn't even get free in the end. :(

Best Of

In 2002 "Best of Vanessa-Mae" was released. It includes a new song Art of War and songs from her entire career, classical and crossover. It also includes a bonus video to Art of War, which is a montage of all of her videos, and I think that is a nice little tribute to her career. This album is recommended to anyone, especially a person who wants to learn about her music.

Art of War - This is the brand new song included on Best Of. It's very powerful, fast, and energetic. The video for Art of War is a montage of all of her videos.

Tocatta & Fugue in d Minor - see description under The Violin Player album.
Destiny - see description under Subject to Change album.
I'm a Doun for Lack o' Johnnie - see description under Storm album.
Storm - see description under Storm album.

Contradanza - see description under The Violin Player album.
Devil's Trill - This song was included on the classical album "The Original Four Seasons and The Devil's Trill Sonata" and was also released as a single. This is one of my favorites. It has a really good beat and the tune certainly sounds "devilish."
