The Neck
My neck has finally come. I got a pretty good deal on it from ebay. It is a Fender Stratocaster Replacement Neck. I bought it for about $150. I am aware it is an import neck because of the skunk stripe and truss rod placement, but I still got a great deal considering the cost of a refret these days. Anyway, the secret to Vaughan's tone is the combination of huge frets, insanely heavy strings, and high action. For some reason all these things together produce amazing tone and sustain. I was lucky to get such a good neck for such an amazing price.
Installation of the neck couldn't be easier. There are four screws on the base of the neck that bolt it onto the body. Simply remove the screws on the old neck, switch the necks, and replace the screws. I had to do some minor setup tweaking of the bridge for intonation and string height, but with proper knowledge it is really easy.
Here is a close-up of the headstock. The tuning pegs are standard Kluson tuners. Notice this neck has been "reliced" or aged to look like a vintage 1960's neck, just like Stevie's.
