Chapter 8 The book dropped to the floor from her now limp hands, suddenly she couldn't hear the arguing and the loud noise all around. She slumped down to the couch next to her, her heart racing. "Nyla? Baby are you still there?" Her mother's voice rang out over the phone. "Y-yeah, I'm here Mom. What...?" "It happened last night, the doctor called me and I've been on the phone all morning booking a flight. My flight leaves in about an hour, so I need to get going. I didn't book you a flight cause I didn't know what your schedule was. But I want you to take the earliest flight you can and get down there." "Y-yeah, ok." She whispered. This wasn't happening, it wasn't. "Ok, I'm gonna get going. Give me a call baby when you get there ok?" "I will." "Alright, see you soon then honey! I love you, bye." She turned the phone off, and just sat there, staring blankly ahead. Her body was shaking with unreleased tears. Not Grandma, not her Grandma. She had to be alright. Quickly, she turned her phone on, dialing information to get the phone number of the nearest airport. "I don't give a crap about what you think is best Kev! I'm gonna drive damnit!" Nick yelled. "Did you even stop to think that you could get lost? You could be late? The weather up north is terrible Nick! What in the hell are you thinking?!" Kevin ranted. "I don't..." He stopped, looking over suddenly at Nyla who was now sitting on the couch in the corner of the room. Looking down, he saw the book she was holding, on the floor, face down. Something wasn't right, he didn't know how he knew, but he just knew. "Nyla?" He called. Erin turned. "Nyla? Honey!" She rushed over, sitting next to her. "What's wrong sweetie?" She couldn't stop shaking; she closed her phone, standing shakily. "I have to go pack." "Where're you going? What's going on?" Brian asked softly. "I have to go." She rambled. Kevin stood, stopping her, his hands on her shoulders. "Nyla, what happened? Where are you going?" "G-Grandma, she...she had a heart attack. I have to go see her." "Oh no." Howie whispered. "I've gotta get there, gonna drive." "Drive?! Not another one!" Kevin groaned. Erin glared at Kevin, then turned to Nyla. "Honey, why don't you fly?" "Can't, there's not an available flight until Thursday. That's three days from now, too late. Anything could happen, she could have another, she could..." She stopped, her voice breaking. "I have to drive." "Honey it's gonna take longer if you drive! Just wait for the..." "I can't wait Erin! I can't! I have to do this now! I'm gonna drive to New York and see her. I have to go home and pack." "Wait!" Brian called out, walking over to Nyla. "You're gonna go to New York...and so is Nick." "So? What's your point?" Nick replied. Brian looked between the two. It was time the two got their differences settled, once and for all. And what better way then during a long road trip? "Why don't you ride with Nick? Why don't you two go to New York, together?" |
