ROSWELL'S PAGE

I'm not one of the original exiles, as you've probably guessed by my nickname

When we crashed here, I found the place already inhabited by other velyr.  Despite the fact that our leaders taught that the exiles were notorious criminals with dangerous mindsets, I've found them to be welcome company.  They do have a lot of odd ideas, many of which they've picked up from the humans on this planet.

.Velyr were designed to be a technological race.  Many of us have cybernetic implants which allow us to communicate via an electronic net, similar to your internet.  Our net involves all senses, however, not just sight and sound.  The typical implant replaces one eye and ear with synthetic parts.  This enhances sight and sound at least two-fold, even without connection to the net.

Velyr accept our role as created beings.  We do not feel the drive to be individuals as you humans do.  We are happy knowing that we are parts in the great velyr machine.  Each of us is merely a cell, expendable if necessary.  When I realized that I was stranded here, I knew that the elders would not bother looking for me, and I understood why.  I never expected the "rescue" a human would have hoped for.

Velyr do not feel the need for privacy, either.  On the net, we are linked to one another constantly.  There is no way for one velyr to be separate - and no desire to be, either.  Thee hardest part of life here is the solitude.  Without the net, we feel hollow, as though only a shell of our real self is left.  It took over half a human century for me to adjust, and to want to live again.
.
Alexei feels that I am best qualified to give an objective view on the human situation.  Velyr are not human; we can never become human; we do not wish to become human.  Yet humans have traditionally feared and hated anything not human.  Since the arrival of the exiles, their fleeting contact with humans has been magnified into myth and legend.  Velyr have been painted as either gods or demons, but never simply other beings.

I am not certain that humans will ever be ready to accept us.  You cannot even accept the differences inherent in your own race - skin color, gender, sexuality, belief systems.  Until you can tolerate yourselves without hatred, how can you tolerate nonhumans?

This is the end of the Darksyde tour.  I hope that it has served its purpose.  I hope that humans are more advanced than I have believed.
