| Materia |
With Materia, your group will suddenly become much stronger. Different types of materia do different things. There are several varieties, and I will cover them all in this section. First I am starting with the summoning ones, because they are the ones most people are likely to ask about. Then, after that, I'll move on to list the other types. This list is not entirely complete, but it comes amazingly close.
| Summoning Materia |
The summoning spells in Final Fantasy games have always been some of the best-looking spells in videogames, even as far back as Final Fantasy V. And in this game, they look good on a whole new level. But even more impressive than the lengthy (sometimes annoying) animations are the effects these monsters can have on your foes. A new player will find that the path is much easier if he has a few beasts at his beck and call.
Choco/Mog Effect: A Chocobo will race through and stomp the enemy. Sometimes, a fat Chocobo may drop down on them and squash them. When you reach the chocobo farm, talk to the nearest chocobo. You'll be offered possible responses. Choose 'wark' as your response, and you'll receive the materia. |
Shiva Effect: She hits the enemies with an ice blast. You can find this one in Junon. Before receiving it, you must save Priscilla. |
Ifrit Effect: A pit opens in the ground and Ifrit comes out. He then turns to a blazing ball of hellfire and blazes through the lines of your foes, doing fire damage to them all. You get this as a reward for defeating Jenova the first time, on the Shinra cargo ship. |
Ramuh Effect: This ancient god in the form of a wizard brings down bolts of lightning to shock your enemies. The first time you are involved in a Chocobo race, check the stables carefully to find this one. |
Titan Effect: The Titan lifts up a plate of soil and turns it over on your enemies, crushing them. When you are at the destroyed reactor in Gongaga, be sure to look around carefully to find this one. |
Odin Effect: This monster of chaos attacks in two various ways, but the effect is generally the same. He will take the souls out of some of your enemies, instantly killing them. The success rate drops dramatically when you attempt to use it on anything but the weakest of foes. He's locked away in the safe at Nibelheim, in the mansion. You must unlock the safe using a combinatin (instructions are found in the FAQs section of the guide, as well as in the strategies included in the walkthrough of Disc One). |
Kjata Effect: I have never acquired this one, so I have no idea what it does. If you add it to your inventory, feel free to tell me what I've been missing out on. I'm also not sure where this one is found. If you know its exact location, please tell me. |
Bahamut Effect: This great beast descends on the enemy from a black haze and sends a blast of dragon breath their way. Found in the Temple of the Ancients, after you defeat the red dragon. |
Alexander Effect: I have never acquired this one, so I have no idea what it does. In the maze at the base of the mountain where you snowboard, find a pool of water and dip your hands in it. Then find and defeat a snow queen. |
Neo Bahamut Effect: The ground on which the enemy rests is ripped away and sent skyward, where an enormous dragon causes it to disintegrate amidst white dragon flame. I currently can't remember where I found this one, but I'll put the location here when I recall it. |
Leviathan Effect: A monstrous serpent sends a wave of water washing over the enemy. You win this prize if you take Yuffie to the top of a tower in Utai and prove victorious over a series of trials. |
Phoenix Effect: You'll be glad you have this materia when you summon a giant bird that restores your party. At Fort Condor, search the giant egg after you have won the minigame against approaching Shinra soldiers. |
Hades Effect: The enemy is caught up in a cauldron of wicked black magic. Scour the ocean to find a plane that has been downed, then search it for this elusive materia. |
Typoon Effect: A fat, ugly monster comes and sneezes on the enemy, which does a medium amount of wind damage. You'll find this guy if you search the ancient forest near Cosmo Canyon, but he's hardly worth the bother (of course, I know that won't stop you from searching). |
Zero Bahamut Effect: Since I've never gotten the thing, I don't have a good description of what it does. Maybe I'll have to play through the game again... someday. You get this guy once you have restored the Huge Materia pieces to Cosmo Canyon and have the Bahamut and Neo Bahamut spells. |
Knights of the Round Effect: A series of powerful knights sweeps by the enemy and reigns down several severe blows on them. This is enough to seriously injure most enemies. If you use it well, it makes the final battle quite manageable. You'll find this wonderful spell in a cave located on an island in the northeast section of the map. Only the golden chocobo can get there, and you can find out how to obtain it in the Items section of this guide, or in the FAQs section. |
| Huge Materia |
You will need to retrieve four pieces of Huge Materia if you want to obtain some of the more elusive bits of materia the game has to offer. Late in the game, it will be possible to acquire those four pieces. Specific instructions are given on this page. Below, I've listed the locations and brief directions for your convenience:
| Huge Materia #1: Reach the train's engine room within 10 minutes and stop it from crashing into North Corel. |
| Huge Materia #2: The old man in Fort Condor will give you it once you stop the approaching army from reaching the giant egg. |
| Huge Materia #3: After you have sunk the red submarine in the minigame, search the wreckage to find the materia. |
| Huge Materia #4: In Rocket Village, board the launching rocket. Enter the code before your time runs out. |
Once you have the four pieces of Huge Materia, you should take them to Cosmo Canyon where they can be combined.
| Green Materia |
These are the most common in the game. Around half of them can be purchased in shops. The others you must find. The table below reflects where you will need to go to find them, their cost, the name, and what spells they teach.
