When hiking where there may be ticks: * Tuck your pants into your socks to prevent ticks from climbing up your legs.
* Wear a light colored, long sleeved shirt which will allow you to see a tick crawling upon it. Tuck it into your pants and button up the cuffs.
* Wear a hat to protect your scalp.
* Stay on the trail out of brush and thick grass.
* Wear insect repellent containing DEET.
* Check your body carefully after every hike. Ticks like the scalp, back of the knees and groin.
* Remove any ticks you find right away and save it in a vial with cotton and water. My Doctor tells me that it normally takes 24 hours before there is a transfer of pathogens. Yes, I have been bitten but did not contract any diseases.
* Seek medical help if a red "bull's eye" rash appears or if you have flu like symptoms. |
