Chava Alberstein is an Israeli (perhaps the Israeli) folksinger. One of my favorites.
Edith Piaf is also very well-known. She probably isn't supposed to, but she cheers me up anyway, even the sad songs.
Ella Fitzgerald has a very warm voice that keeps me engaged for hours. She's very well-known, but here is a good page about her.
Rufus Wainwright writes and sings interesting music. When Meghan introduced me to him, I thought his voice was annoying. Then I heard some more of his music, in particular one song called Barcelona, and now I think it's good. I still like the Beatles' Across the Universe better than his cover, though.
Danny Kaye is often considered more entertainer than crooner, but his voice is one of my favorites. It's soothing and fatherly and also funny and incredibly versatile.
Ben Folds is a creative songwriter with a reasonably versatile voice. I like Ben Folds Five material a little more than his solo work.
Freddie Mercury was a great talent - a first-class performer, but also a wonderful singer.
Eric Idle of Monty Python fame is a clever singer and songwriter. I love most of his work, though I did think of him as something of a sellout a few years ago. Now I realize the only way to do anything is sell out.
They Might Be Giants. Creative, and the most Levinasian band I know.
Bobby McFerrin is lovely and wonderful and I hope he comes to Seattle again so that this time I can see him!
Music
Track Nine is an up-and-coming band that is showing great promise. OK, that's a lie.
Tempest is a folk-rock band, symbolizing the almost perfect union of playing celtic music and acting like rock stars. The music is proggy enough to be sophisticated and folksy enough to be memorable. And the live performances kick ass. Although I don't really know what the recorded performances might do, I only went to a live performance.
