EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
OFFICIATING POSITIONS
Games in Victoria are officiated using 4 or 5 man crews, although for finals, 7 man  crews are common.

The basic 4/5 man crew consists of....

REFEREE
Has general oversight and control of the game.  Positioned behind the offensive team, covering action on and around the quarterback.

UMPIRE
Has jurisdiction over player equipment.  Positioned behind the defensive team, covering action on and around the interior linemen.

LINESMAN
Responsible for the operation of the chains and down marker (which indicates the 10 yard distance that the offense must achieve in 4 plays to retain possession).  Positioned on the sideline in line with the ball, the linesman covers action by players near the line of scrimmage and all action near his sideline.

LINE JUDGE
Positioned opposite the linesman on the other side of the field and has similar duties.

BACK JUDGE (optional)
Positioned deep in the defensive backfield, responsible for rulings on deep pass plays, kicks and the timing of the game
