Hand Made Paper” manufacturing is one of the oldest & traditional
art of theworld & was invented by Ts’alun who was one of the
Imperial guards in China by Los A.D. He prepared a paper for the
Emperor, which was made from Mulbbery,Fish nets,cotton rags
and other barks.But it is reported that even before in China, Indians
have credit, for having used paper made from cellulose fiber during
the Third Century B.C. prior to this period of ancient era, the plam
leaves or similar media was in practical for writing purpose in India.
Word ‘Paper’ has been derived from ‘papyrus’ on the banks of Nile
River and was media of communication in Egypt. By 793 A.D.
paper was introduced inBangladad for the first time by
Harun-al-Rashid.
Paper making was first introduced in Kashmir from Samarkand by
Zanulabin during 1420-1470. This art of "Hand made Paper" making
was mainly carried on by the Muslims named of “Kagzis” |
It gradually spread with growth in civilization to several parts of India, like in
Rajasthan,
Uttarpradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra & Karnataka. The
Industrial revolution in several part of world during 18th and 19th Century resulted into
rapid establishment of several paper mills for huge bulk production of paper. This
adversely affected the growth of "Hand Made Paper" Sector and forcing large
number of skilled "Hand Made Paper" makers/artisans to become idle &
jobless. Then during freedom struggle Mr. M.K.Gandhi-the father of nation-India,
Dr. J.C. Kumarappa and Mr. K.B. Joshi took initiative to develop this HMP industry.
Now days it is coming up very nicely & rapidly thereby providing large opportunities
of Self- employment & employment to rural sectors in India. This also contributing now
to save huge
number of trees to be cut protecting our Earth’s precious environment thereby
reducing pollution
level considerably & maintaining Ecological balance of nature.
