City of Lost Children, The
[BACK]
[DVD Info]
This French film is about a scientist named Krank (Daniel Emilfork) who cannot dream (and has a midget wife, 5 servants who look exactly the same, and a brain in a fish tank that talks). He's very lonely so he sends his minions into town to steal children for him. When the children arrive he hooks them up to a machine and steals their dreams. However, every time he does this the children have nightmares and he can't have a good dream. One night One (Ron Perlman), a circus strong man who talks in third person, has his little brother (who eats constantly) stolen. While looking for him, he runs into a group of orphans who steal things for the Octopus (a Siamese twin joined from the hip). There One meets Miette (Judith Vittet). With her help he searches for his little brother, which proves to be difficult with the Octopus on his tail with a flea that makes people kill each other, a crazy man who lives under the sea, and people trying to kill them.
If you keep being sassy you'll be in a lot of trouble....there's no shortage of orphans... ~Octopus.
What, what, WHAT is up with french people and making little girls fall in love with older men? This girl has to be 9-ish and he's gotta be in his 20's. Thank goodness they didn't go all the way there like they did in the "Professional." Yeesh.
Although it has its interesting parts this flick kind of just drags on. I found myself looking at the timer multiple times. It's really slow and doesn't really go anywhere. I liked the main character One (I think I've seen him before...) and the little girl and they have their good moments but the rest of the movie was boring and not a lot of action. There were no twists or turns, no exciting moments, no jokes. Then after all this boring-ness it just ends. It must be one of those films where you just enjoy the scenery (which was very pretty by the way...similar to "Amelie"). Because of this, the jury gives this flick :
