Those Sticks Cannot Be Trees

I ordered some trees from a coupon
and was really shocked when they came,
Sending those scrawny little sticks I thought,
This company is really lame.

I planted them all in flower pots
and housed them their first year,
Planting those tiny sticks outside;
them dying was my greatest fear.

The second year I carried them out
to plant them in the ground,
Still in my mind I had a real doubt
that next year they'd be around.

My son was always kidding me,
about my sticks, how he teased me,
Look at your little sticks Mom,
That's all they are and all they'll be.

Well, now it's 10 years later
and those sticks are now tall trees,
When I look far up to the tree tops
I think, "Dear Lord, stop them please!"
