Notes Exterior of Tabernacle

a)The purpose of the tabernacle was to allow God to dwell among the Israelites in order to meet their needs.

Even though the people were not particularly seeking God, He sought them

EX 25:8 "Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. 9 Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.

This same principle is found in the N.T. concerning Jesus JN 1:10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

b)The high standards of God are apparent in the tabernacle. The demands of God must be met or else there is no forgiveness. God is absolutely holy and cannot lower His standards in any way.

c)The outer court compares to a person's body in that it is visible to the world but the real person lives within the body.

The Holy Place was under coverings and corresponds to a person's soul where decisions are made, emotions are felt and one is self-conscious.

The Most Holy Place was where God dwelt and corresponds to man's spirit which gives him a sensitivity to God. Sometimes referred to as the inner man. A person is able to communicate with God only through his spirit.

d)Pictures in the Tabernacle 1.Christ - JN 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 2.Believer - EPH 2:21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

e)These names refer to the same Tabernacle

Tent, Sanctuary, Tabernacle of the Congregation, Tabernacle of the Lord, Tabernacle of Testimony, Tabernacle of Witness.

d)The materials for making the tabernacle were provided by God from the Egyptians.

EX 12:35 The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. 36 The LORD had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.
