No 1 BBC World Service

The BBC's English service is tops. From my point of view they are one of the easiest stations to find on the shortwave dial and by far have one of the best news services in English (not even VOA compares). The problem with news stations in America esp. CNN is they get stuck on one story. During the OJ Simpson trial they spent over 90% of their air time talking about the OJ Simpson trial practically ignoring international and other domestic events. Now the same thing has happend with the Bill Clinton scandal! The other problem with US news is it's now become 75% speculation, 25% news. It's almost getting to the point where the Ruch Limbaugh show offers more news than the 24 hour news networks of the US. The BBC offers news and speculation(in the BBC's case it's analysis of the stories) in a balanced proportion.

Other shows that I listen to frequently are Meridian, Off The Shelf, Outlook, Science in Action, and of course World of Music. I am sorry to see that they no longer offer Jazz for the Asking. It was one of my favorites, but at least the CBC still has a jazz show.

You can hear the BBC in North America on 17840 during most daytime hours and in the evenings and through the night on 5975khz and 6175khz.

No 2 Radio Netherlands

Probably one of the biggest reasons for this is because of the show Research File. A show dealing with things going on in the world of science. They have a great English service to North America in my opinion. They also have a great website which offers reviews covering most of the shortwave radios that are out on the market, even some that aren't. I'll have there website address next time I update this page.

No 3 Voice of Turkey

They didn't receive this ranking for their English service. I must admit that there English service is quite short. No I listen to their station for the music. They broadcast several hours of music during most weekday evenings on 9445khz to North America and I think parts of Europe(1-4utc, maybe even longer). Some really great music. It would be nice if they would have a broacast play the same music, but do the announcing in English so I could actually know who the musicians are so I could them up!!

Well that's it for my December/January update. If all goes well I will update this page before the end of January!
