Science Popularisation Vs Public Understanding of Science Many a year year ago, in 1996, when the Vigyan Prasar site (vigyanpasar.com) was launched, an attempt was made to submit it to popular search engines under the "Science Popularisation" category. Surprisingly, at the time, when one entered "science+popularisation" and searched the net on popular search engines, the search returned "nil" results i.e. no matches were to be found! Some further exploration revealed that the category to match Vigyan Prasar site's content was better known in Amerca as "Public Understanding of Science". This expression was not too familiar or in much use in India (or in many other countries as well) then. All this has changed. Recently (November 2001), when a search for "science+popularisation" was repeated on Yahoo, it came back with over 3600 matches, with Vigyan Prasar site heading the list. Welcome change, that!
