There are both metal and glass envelope styles available in NOS tubes, although current production tubes are glass only. These are beefy audio power output tubes, and some of the variants like the 5881 even have found uses in power supplies. These tubes originally were found in large console radio sets, in their first pre-WWII form of the 6L6G, and the 6L6 metal type. These tubes quickly proved to design technicians that they could handle heavy loads and drive speakers to high volume. Thus, they quickly became the darlings of public address and musical instrument amplifier manufacturers and designers. Different varieties of these tubes can still be found in the NOS market, as this tube was improved over the years. There are European and industrial/military types to make the mix even more interesting to the audiophile, with almost none of them being "bad" or low-quality. |
